Mary Mara Obituary

Mary Theresa Mara June 26, 2022 Syracuse native Mary Mara has died while swimming in the St. Lawrence River near Cape Vincent, NY. Authorities in Jefferson County believe she drowned sometime on Sunday morning, June 26. She was 61. For 32 years, Mary worked as an actor in film, television and the theater. Over her remarkable career, she appeared in more than 130 films and television episodes, in addition to stage productions off-Broadway and in Los Angeles. Her last movie, "Break Even," was in 2020. Mary's credits included movie roles in "Mr. Saturday Night," with Billy Crystal; "Love Potion No. 9," with Sandra Bullock; "The Hard Way," with Michael J. Fox; and "A Civil Action," with John Travolta, among many others. On television, she co-starred as Inspector Bryn Carson in the CBS police procedural, "Nash Bridges," and created the recurring role of Loretta Sweet in NBC's pathbreaking medical drama, "ER." She also played Mrs. Sullivan on Showtime's "Ray Donovan," and appeared numerous times on United Paramount Network's "Star Trek: Enterprise." On the stage, she turned in accomplished performances at venues from the Manhattan Theatre Club in New York to the Mark Taper Forum in Los Angeles. Mary was loved, admired and respected not only by her family and friends, but also by her audiences and colleagues in the entertainment industry. News of her death appeared in major media across five continents. Along with many in "the business," fellow actor James Woods immediately tweeted out praise and condolences. Billy Crystal dedicated the June 28 performance of his musical, "Mr. Saturday Night on Broadway," to Mary's memory. Born September 21, 1960, Mary was the fourth and youngest child of Roger J. Mara and Lucille Mayer Mara. Her father was a businessman, politician and director of special events for the New York State Fair. Her mother was a pilot and control-tower operator at the Syracuse airport early in her life, and eventually became a financial analyst for the City of Syracuse. Mara's dramatic talents developed at Thomas J. Corcoran High School in Syracuse, where she starred in plays and excelled in regional public-speaking competitions before graduating in 1977. In the late 1970's, she moved to Denver to work with her brother, Roger J. Mara, Jr., a professional puppeteer and producer who won a regional Emmy Award for a video series about bullying. In 1980, she moved to San Francisco Bay Area, where she co-founded a local theater group and attended San Francisco University. While still an undergraduate, she was admitted to the Yale School of Drama (now the David Geffen School of Drama at Yale University), where she earned a Master of Fine Arts certificate in 1988. Throughout her career, she lived mainly in New York City and Southern California, before returning to Syracuse in 2019. Mary is survived by her stepdaughter, Caitlyn Mersola, of Sylmar, Calif.; her sister, Martha Mara, of Syracuse; another sister and brother-in-law, Susan Mara and Scott Dailey, of Kent, Wash.; and a nephew, Christopher Dailey, of Sammamish, Wash. Plans for a memorial are in progress. Donations in Mary's memory may be sent to the Burbank Animal Shelter in Burbank, Calif., where Mary adopted her beloved dog, Lady. Donations may also go to the Second Chance Canine Adoption Shelter in Jamesville, NY. Mary loved the Thousand Islands and the St. Lawrence River perhaps more than anywhere else. Like many in Syracuse, she began going there as a child, and vacationed there nearly every summer. "The River" was Mary's peace, solace and renewal. Now, it has carried her home. Arrangements are with Frederick Bros. Funeral Home, Theresa, NY. To leave condolences go to www.frederickbrosfuneralhome.com and access the obituary. I have been trying to remember the first time I met Mary and I can´t quite remember, but when we met, it felt like I had known her all my life. She was such a bright light, larger than life, beautiful human being. I will miss her deeply and will look for signs of her throughout each day.

Sending love and light to Catie, Martha and Susan. May your memories carry you through your grieving.

So many memories of my times with Mary. She is and was always a bright light in my life. Sometimes , on Sunday mornings, we would meet on a park bench in the center of New Haven, sit quietly and drink coffee, then wander into the local church, and sit at the back and listen to the people sing their hymns. It was oddly peaceful to see all of those otherwise strangers, singing together as one.
I will never forget this soul, and am tremendously grateful for having her as a part of my life.
She makes me smile every time I think of her, and she always will. Rest peacefully Mary. We will miss you here. Thank you, for stopping by, and entertaining us while you were here.
I love you,

Mary´s sudden and unexpected passing evokes deep sadness for so many of us. Not only her coworkers in the performing arts industry and her legions of fans, but also her many friends from so many chapters in her life. I met her in the fall of 1986 when we were both beginning our time in the acting program at the Yale School of Drama. I was immediately delighted, impressed, and impacted by her "larger than life force of nature" spirit. Her talent was absolutely huge - immense. Her heart was the very same. To be friends with Mary was to have a deep heart connection... Strong and unconditional love. I am so grateful for her presence in my life. I will continue to feel that presence as time goes by. Sending deep condolences and very warm wishes to all of her family and friends. Thank you, Mary Mara!

Mary and I were injured on the same afternoon in 1965. We found ourselves on emergency room beds next to each other at Community General Hospital on the south side of Syracuse, New York. She said: "My name is Mary Mara, and my father is Roger Mara. I am in kindergarten. I am getting stitches in my knee." So, I answered with my name, and how I was "getting stitches in my eyebrow. I fell off a swingset and it cut above my eye." Turns out she was from Most Holy Rosary Parish, as was I. My mother, a nurse had made certain a plastic surgeon would stitch my visible wound. When he appeared to place the stitches, Mary kept me company, telling me more about herself. So I did not feel so alone, nor as worried about my injury. An outspoken child, I can see how she ended up in the entertainment field. She was a classmate in grade school through 9th grade. I wish she had not taken a swim that day. Many people will feel the loss. Yet she will be seen and heard on the screen.

Mary was one of my students at Most Holy Rosary High School in Syracuse...she was a bright light, performed in school plays, and always had an inquisitive and charmingly impish twinkle in her eyes. I enjoyed many fun conversations with her, and her enthusiasm and big smile always brightened my day. I was so happy that she was able to achieve her dream of acting...she is gone way too soon. RIP sweet Mary.
