I loved it, too. It was nice to see Roger realize that he could age gracefully with a youthful spirit rather than try to relive youth itself.

u/Swimming_snail avatar

Exactly this

His journey to wasn't as prevalent to the show as Don or Peggy (or even Joan) but I really enjoyed seeing his journey.

The acid trip(s) were phenomenal.

u/themilkman42069 avatar

I feel like doing acid with that crowd would be the worst trip ever

They seemed okay, if pretentious . But I'm not a big fan of tripping inside.

He took a few other trips - naked standing at the window in one lol

One of the best episodes for sure.

Especially with Julia Ormand!!!!

She’s 16 years my senior and I’d gladly age gracefully with her!

It's this sort of post + comment that makes me love this sub Reddit so much. There's so many thoughtful and respectful little exchanges that go on here that make me see the show in new ways.

And someone who actually finds his jokes funny!

u/blacktieaffair avatar

Very well put.

"One day, that will be us"

"Yeah tomorrow"

Roger's last quip

u/kevin5lynn avatar

I sure did. Roger stopped looking backwards and embraced the future.

u/Swimming_snail avatar

He finally got his timing right!

You look like you were born in a bowtie.

I didn't tie that one either.

I loved this ending, with them together.

It always gives me a tickle thinking of Roger learning French phrases like "For my mother" to amuse/surprise Marie.

Honestly, a perfect match.

u/smegmancer avatar

Endless banter.

I just now today realized that this ending calls back to his failed Paris romance with Annabelle Mathis - the two women even somewhat resemble each other. I suppose her brief entrance in the story was a foreshadowing of the future romance with Marie.

I always felt she was elegant like Moana, immature like Jane, romantic like Annabelle, and pure chaos like every other fling he had. She was everything he needed so he wouldn’t be bored.

Joan was honestly too mature for him which is why they were better off as best friends and oddly great long distance co-parents.

Edited

Are they coparents? I feel like her and Bob are coparents. I imagine Roger is more of a fun uncle who comes into town twice a year and takes you to baseball games and gets you hyped on too much sugar

I’d argue that was Roger’s most successful relationship as a parent. lol. He’s just not very functional in that role. I’d also argue that Roger was ALWAYS a better father to Kevin than Greg, but that’s an easy shot to make.

I think Roger was as involved as Joan let him be. She had a good sense of what he could handle as a parent and protected Kevin appropriately by not letting him fully in a father role. In the end he took care of them financially as well, even when she said she didn’t need it.

I guess he was a good “coparent” in a 1960s sense. He respected Joan’s boundaries, cared about Kevin and popped in when he could in a way that wasn’t emotionally damaging, and contributed financially.

Yes. I did not foresee Roger as getting the happiest ending but I’m glad it happened lol

i loved when he called her pretending to be her husband "allo marie" he's such an idiot<3

u/BlackLilith13 avatar

I loved this for him!! And I love even more that she’s an age appropriate partner. This was perfect for him. No crumbs.

His real life wife is Mona, his first wife in the show. Her name is Talia Balsam.

Balsam’s ex husband was George Clooney. Up there with Lisa Bonet in terms of husband handsomeness

She has very good taste

I loved that he ended up with someone who knew how to put him in his place and stand up for herself. Not that Mona wasn’t great for him but we all know he wasn’t great for her. I appreciated that this character knew all about him and didn’t pull any punches. “All I got was ‘suitcase’!” And then yeah, by the end he’s actually learning her language. Part of me expected them to have him end up with Joan, but this was so much better and that storyline had definitely run its full course!

I loved him in Joan as well. I know it was an affair, but he actually respected her and loved her. At least until the Jaguar storyline, when things get murky, and Roger ends up acting just like Roger. And I agree the storyline lost momento.

In… Joan? I guess that’s technically correct…

Put him in his place? Reverse the genders and you will be screaming sexism. She is a crazy individual who stole Dons furniture.

u/gumbyiswatchingyou avatar

Marie isn’t my favorite character either but this is a show full of people who make some morally questionable decisions. And yes I think the person you’re replying to is right, Roger could be somewhat immature and he needs someone who can put him in his place when he’s being an idiot.

To reverse the genders, the Henry/Betty relationship also works because of a similar dynamic. Henry’s the level headed and realistic one who calls her on it when she’s throwing a tantrum or acting out.

u/Tomlette1 avatar

Yeah, she put him in his place as in stood up for herself when he was being sexist. No need for a whataboutism here

u/Tex_Watson avatar

lmao

What a bizarre take.

Roger's and Pete's endings were great. I would've liked to have seen a longer view to Joan's company, but that gave me the same feel as the ending on The Marvelous Mrs Maisel. Peggy's ending was very similar, but more of a no-ending ending.

As Joan would say, it's fantastic. What a mess.

u/taylortherod avatar

I like thinking about how Roger would have been Don’s father in law if Don and Megan didn’t divorce lol

u/vielpotential avatar

that's so funny!!

Roger's journey was one of the more underrated storylines throughout Mad Men. I also love the fact that the stuff he did that was more liberally minded actually ended up helping him. Not with regaining his youth but with embracing the loss of his youth.

I've always wanted to ask what they were drinking at this moment. The decanter looks like water but the liquid in the glass is cloudy.

Pastis

I loved their ending the best. She was age appropriate, but immature and chaotic.

In other words, she was everything he needed. I loved them.

Edited

Flawed characters not getting shit endings to punish them and isolate the audience that loves them?

Refreshing for what tv is now

u/jaymickef avatar

I did.

u/Ok_Artichoke8 avatar

It was maybe the most genuine happy ending

u/ddredjr avatar

I think the relationship will work because they're already aware of each other's flaws, there aren't the unrealistic expectations that he and Jane had.

Roger’s sense of humor was always impeccable

I do like that line. It is interesting how he ends up in a romantic relationship with Megan's mother. Sometimes relationships like that get created from situations you don't expect.

Man. I love Roger.

u/gaijin91 avatar

he's gonna get a third divorce lol. unless he dies of a coronary first

I see him having a heart attack about two years after this. This is definitely his last marriage.

Yeah, they both seemed like each-other's rebound.

Meh. I thought all of it was wrapped up too nicely with a bow. I get Don’s ending but the rest seemed like fan service.

u/hhhhdmt avatar

I bet Roger continued to sleep with younger women. As he should.
