Recently incarcerated Baron (Joe Keery) strikes up a friendship with cellmate Otis (Aldis Hodge), a man with a well-versed history of prison breaks. As the pair hatch an escape plan together, Baron recalls the story of how he met Marmalade (Camila Morrone), the love of his life, and their "Bonnie and Clyde" style scheme to rob a bank in order to care for his sick mother and give the couple the life they've always dreamed of. Patrick Exciting, fun twists, funny, looks beautiful and filled with great performances. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/11/24 Full Review J. A filmmaker with an original vision and a boldness to subvert expectations and take big swings. ODonnell gets some truly amazing performances from his leads and empowers them to break away from what the audience expects them to do based on their past roles. The cinematography, score and art direction are exceptional and make the modest budget blossom to a heroic potential. The writing is nuanced and over all its definitely worth repeat viewings. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/11/24 Full Review Harry O The movie seems to be just plodding along, but things aren't quite what they seem to be. As twists are revealed, the movie becomes more and more enjoyable. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 04/07/24 Full Review acsdoug D It tries to be clever and original and while I appreciate the effort I don't think the story is good enough to recommend. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 03/28/24 Full Review Thomas S An exciting little movie and off the beaten track . Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/18/24 Full Review Devin C Marmalade 2024 ★★★ Watched Mar 07, 2024 Devin Cline's review published on Letterboxd: Heard some really good things about this in recent weeks, but ultimately it wound up being just "ok". I really wanted to like this way more then I did considering the two major leads and how much I like them elsewhere. Joe Keery from 'Stranger Things' fame is Baron. He's somewhat of a slow talking, slow to process things, simpleton. Much of this story revolves around him sharing different memories with his cellmate Otis played by Aldis Hodge. The two of them scheme together to break out of their prison surroundings. Baron is pretty hell-bent on joining Marmalade on the outside, where they can live a whole different life together, free of such constraints. Camilla Morrone as movie title 'Marmalade', takes Baron's breath away from her very first entrance and shows up with pink hair and an attitude early on. She wears flashy outfits and pants (snakeskin?) and talks a lot of game, putting all different ideas into Baron's head in terms of scheming to get rich quick. She's a decently talented actress who has done much better work then this in other roles like 'Never Goin' Back', 'Death Wish', and 'Mickey and the Bear'. I wasn't overly big on her performance here. Loved her in both Never Goin' Back and Mickey and the Bear. If you are a fan of hers, make sure you check those two movies out if you haven't already. Somewhere between the midway point and the last 3/4 of this one, I began to lose major interest. It may have been that I was pretty tired at this point watching it so late. Perhaps I should re-watch the ending one more time to see if I really did miss anything major that would change my overall rating and feelings. I don't know. Pretty disappointed. Original music from Brooke Blair and Will Blair was not a big standout. Anton Bitel Little White Lies half the fun of in writer/director Keir O’Donnell’s genre-twisting romantic noir/escapist road movie is puzzling out where and how exactly the truth lies. Feb 19, 2024 Full Review Monica Castillo RogerEbert.com Keir O'Donnell’s delightful feature debut “Marmalade” is the kind of comedy that zigs when you expect it to zag, like a carnival ride that catches you by surprise. Rated: 3/4 Feb 12, 2024 Full Review Ben Kenigsberg New York Times In essence, "Marmalade" pretends to be more dunderheaded than it is, then acts as if it's been smart all along, in a shift that takes it from insulting to incoherent. Feb 8, 2024 Full Review Jenn Adams Strong Female Antagonist What begins as a familiar story about a frustrating dope turns into an exciting and sweet take on the bank heist subgenre and a robin hood story for the modern age. Rated: B- Mar 9, 2024 Full Review Jake Tropila In Review Online Marmalade occasionally veers down the path of being too clever for its own good, but O’Donnell offers enough inventive twists and turns to keep this iteration of the lovers-on-the-run subgenre fresh and exciting before guiding it to a safe landing.
