Markus Schubert? – OH! We dodged a bullet

Arsenal were said to be heavily linked with Markus Schubert last summer with the starlet being in line to Penn a deal at Emirates on free transfer from Dynamo Dresden, but nothing materialized and he signed up for Schalke 04.

Alongside Arsenal, Bayern Munich and Stuttgart were also interested in Schubert’s signature.

Schubert aims at getting to the next step at Gelsenkirchen: “I am absolutely convinced that I can take my next steps here and made my decision from many requests very consciously met.

“I had great discussions with the people in charge, as well as goalkeeping coach Simon Henzler who shared his ideas about goalkeeper training”.

Bundesliga returned today, and Schalke made the short trip to Signal Iduna Park as Dortmund hosted the Revierderby as Markus Schubert started in goal ahead of Alexander Nübel for David Wagner’s side and he definitely seemed pretty rusty.

Now this may be a lofty comparison, but Schubert has been compared to Manuel Neuer – graduate of Schalke’s infamous Knappenschmiede academy, which has raised bars of expectations out of Markus.

Although the youngster performance for the day definitely makes me wonder whether he would have made it at Arsenal. We boast likes of Emi Martinez and Matt Macey lining up as back ups to Bernd Leno, although the former two are linked with a move away from the Gunners this summer in bid for regular first team football.

Yet I feel we dodged a bullet in Schubert.

Markus may have the ability to become a decent goalie, but needs plenty of time to develop himself and Germany seems rather a perfect environment for him rather than England.
