Purchase options and add-ons
Mark Twain's America features spectacular examples of Twain memorabilia and period Americana from the unsurpassed collections of the Library of Congress: rare illustrations, vintage photographs, popular and fine prints, period views, caricatures, cartoons, maps, and more. Excerpts from Twain's writings are framed in a lively narrative by author Harry L. Katz.
Covering the years between 1850 and 1910, the book gives readers an intimate view of Twain's many roles in life: Mississippi river boat pilot, California gold prospector, "printer's devil" at a small-town newspaper, muckraking journalist, novelist, public speaker extraordinaire, our first major celebrity author. Through letters, political cartoons, photographs and more, Mark Twain's America offers an inside look into Twain's life as well as the literary. social, and political life of America during his time.

Review
"Mark Twain's America reminds us why George Bernard Shaw called Twain 'America's Voltaire.' The man from Hannibal was a powerful voice for social change who wrote and spoke against the corruption he saw in our government, a champion of the values he learned as a child on the Missouri frontier."―Hal Holbrook, creator of Mark Twain Tonight!
"An extraordinarily good book...It's a must, and not just for Twainiacs."―Marsha Dubrow, Examiner.com

Regarding the 1 star review, I must disagree with this review. This book was never meant to be a academic tome. It is a coffee table book for people who are interested in Mark Twain, America, humor, social commentary. That means it is a book for everyone, not just academics.
I recommend this as a great Holiday present, graduation gift, and anytime gift.
On December 8, the Library of Congress issued this statement: "The Library has determined and deeply regrets that its regular and rigorous review protocols were not followed in the editing of this publication. We are identifying where and how these processes broke down in this instance and implementing measures to ensure an egregious lapse of this nature does not occur again."
Misinformation, erroneous conclusions, and uncited text lifted directly from R. Kent Rasmussen's "Mark Twain A to Z." Were Sam alive today, we could all relish the satirical tongue-lashing he would inflict upon this publication and its assemblers.
Mark Twain's America is an embarrassment to the Library of Congress, who no doubt would like to collect every copy and remove its name from the cover.
