NESCAC Announces Men's Track & Field Awards

HADLEY, Mass. – Tufts senior Luke Botsford is the NESCAC's Sabasteanski Award winner as the Most Outstanding Performer. Amherst newcomer Michael Abbey was named the Most Outstanding Rookie and the Amherst staff was selected as the Coaching Staff of the Year by its peers.

Botsford becomes the first athlete in the NESCAC to win the Sabasteanski Award three consecutive years since 2000 and is the fourth Jumbo to garner the honor.

Botsford won three individual NESCAC titles to help Tufts capture its third straight NESCAC Championship. Botsford, a four-time All-NESCAC performer at the 2024 championships, set NESCAC Championship records in the 400-meter and 200-meter races while also contributing to the Jumbos' 4x100 relay that took first place. Botsford's record in the 400-meter race, a time of 47.08, broke the mark held by Williams' Timothy Alspoo (47.56) that was set in 1997. The 200-meter record Botsford broke (21.06) had stood for 30 years and was set by Mario Watts of Amherst (21.31). Botsford was also part of Tufts' 4x400 relay team that finished as runners-up in the event.

Abbey is the second straight Mammoth to garner Most Outstanding Rookie honors and the third Amherst athlete since 2000 to be honored. Abbey won the triple jump in his NESCAC Championship debut with a leap of 14.28 meters and earned All-NESCAC honors.

For the first time since 2000, the Amherst coaching staff of head coach Steve Rubin and assistants Hannah Chappell-Dick, Jamie Carlson, John Murphy, D.J. Petty, and Veronica Rocco, was selected as the NESCAC Coaching Staff of the Year. The staff guided the Mammoths to a NESCAC Runner-Up performance for the first time since 1985. Amherst totaled 151.5 points, the most by the program at a NESCAC Championship. The Mammoths claimed two titles in the men's championship competition and boasted 19 All-NESCAC citations at the meet.
