San Marin handed Redwood its second loss of the MCAL baseball season, 7-4, on Thursday to move into a tie for second place with Novato heading into the final week of competition before the playoffs.
Anthony Scheppler homered and drove in three runs for the Mustangs, who pounded out five runs in the third inning. Matthew Baldino was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI, while Hugh Brady was 2-for-3 and scored a run for the Mustangs.
Rex Solle was 2-for-3 with two RBIs for the Giants (18-3, 12-2 MCAL).
San Marin and Novato, both 9-4 in league play, face each other in the final two games of the regular season, Tuesday and Thursday.
• San Domenico scored twice in the bottom of the eighth inning to top Urban, 11-10, at Albert Park on Wednesday evening. Oliver Bennett’s base hit scored Matilda Hull for the tying run. Bennett then stole second and third, before taking advantage of an overthrown pickoff attempt at third to score. Bennett finished the day at the plate with three hits, and on the mound threw four innings of shutout ball. The Panthers’ Hank Figueroa, Alex Tavano and Colin Falconer had two hits each.
Boys golf
Marin Academy completed an undefeated season as the BCL West champions with Thursday’s 153-180 victory over University at Peacock Gap. Dylan Siegel’s even par 36 set the pace for the Wildcats (12-0), while Charlie Wilhelm came around at 37 and Charlie Hansen carded a 38.
• Redwood’s Sam Sumski shot a 31 at Meadow Club on Thursday as the Giants finished with a 188 score to beat Marin Catholic (190) and Archie Williams (244). The Giants’ Jack Mount and Brody Root both shot a 38. The Wildcats were led by 37s from Theo Anderson and Luca DeNunzio, while Asa Elder paced the Peregrine Falcons with a 42.
Girls lacrosse
Redwood advanced to Saturday’s MCAL final against Marin Catholic, with Wednesday’s thrilling 15-14 semifinal win over San Marin. Mustangs senior Abby Brackett had six goals and an assist, while senior Ella Cameron and sophomore Alex Chamberlain each had two goals and an assist.
• Marin Academy beat Lick-Wilmerding, 15-6, in Wednesday’s BCL West semifinal. Steph Zola had four goals to lead Marin Academy, which got three goals each from Cece Dickinson and Sadie Goodenough. The Wildcats (11-3) are scheduled to face University (7-8) in Friday’s championship game at the Beach Chalet field in San Francisco.
Boys volleyball
Top-seeded Redwood got 16 kills from Beckett Shewey and 27 assists from Auden Baker as it swept past Terra Linda, 25-17, 25-18, 25-17, in an MCAl semifinal on Wednesday night.
The Giants (16-5) are set to battle No. 3 Tam (16-16), which took down No. 2 Archie Williams 22-25, 27-25, 25-20, 25-20, in Friday’s 7 p.m. final at Archie Williams.
Jack Alley added 10 digs for the Giants. Charlie German had six kills and Gavin Atherton had seven digs.
Prep track & field
San Domenico’s Joaquin Foster won the 800 Wednesday to help lead the Panthers to a fourth-place finish in the final tuneup before next week’s Bay Area Conference Championships. Marin Academy’s boys placed seventh in the event, held at San Rafael High, while University’s boys and girls both finished on top of their respective points standings. Athletes from San Rafael High and the Branson school also competed in the meet as guests.
Foster ran a time 1 minute, 59.46 seconds to win the 800 after running a 1:58 relay leg on San Domenico’s winning 4×800 team. Sophomore Omar Williams set the bar high in his debut in the 300 hurdles as he broke the school record with a mark of 44.18 seconds to finish third.
Marin Academy’s Daniel May placed fifth in the 400 (53.58), and was 10th in the 200 (24.47), behind Branson’s Emmanuel Katz (24.46). The Wildcats’ Max Duty took third in the discus (99’6.5″) and sixth in the shot put (34’8.25″).
Branson’s Jasper James set a personal best in the mile (4:37.23) to place sixth. San Rafael’s Kishor Shah was fifth in the long jump (18’10”).
On the girls side, San Domenico and Marin Academy finished seventh and eighth, respectively. Panthers freshman Petra Betti placed third in the 200 and fourth in the 100, and anchored the fifth-place 4×100 relay team. Marin Academy freshman Tatum Colpitts set a personal record to finish third in the 400 (1;02.64), just ahead of Branson’s Imogen Brown (1:02.91). The Bulls’ Zoe Hahn was sixth with a personal record in the 400 (1:04.35) and fifth in the 800 (2:31.78). She also helped Branson’s 4×400 team to a second-place finish. Marin Academy senior Callie Zimmerman was fourth in the 100 hurdles (18.04).
The girls high jump saw Branson’s Tara Curtin set the bar at 5’2′, followed by Marin Academy junior Esme Morrison and San Domenico freshman Ripley Toquinto Tyson in a tie for second place (4’8″).
The BAC League Championships will be held on Saturday, May 4 at Chabot College.
