- johnmM754OIChesterfield, Missouri773 contributionsGreat people watchingGreat for people watching, especially around time of dancing figurines. There are a lot of people in this square most of the time. That night it was crowded too, and not a bad place to watch people. Tremendous historical value if you really want to take the time to search it out.Visited May 2023Traveled with familyWritten June 3, 2023
- Dr_EffingpotHook, United Kingdom767 contributionsTop tip! Visit at 11, midday or 5pm!Top tip! Visit at 11, midday or 5pm! The famous clock only does it's 6 minute show at these times, which most folks seem to find out the hard way! Also for a small price you can also climb the tower of St Peter, which is opposite and watch the show from the top of there, though its about 14 floors up and a bit of a trek and can get quite busy up there. We got a front row seat at the pub in the square and watches it all with a beer! Definitely a must see if visiting Munich!Visited June 2023Traveled with friendsWritten June 7, 2023
- Sarah OMexico, Missouri183 contributionsGo early!Beautiful area in Munich. We had no way to get to see the glockenspiel, so we opted to go down early and just walk around. It was not very busy around 8, which was nice. By the time we left at 9:00, it was already getting busy. Although nothing was open, it was nice to walk around without the crowds.Visited June 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten June 15, 2023

- Gil L405 contributionsWell worth the visit!Took the metro here from the airport during a long layover. Metro was easy to navigate and we were able to use a group ticket for all 5 of us. So much fun to just walk around in this area. But be careful as the cobblestones are uneven in several areas.Visited June 2023Written June 19, 2023

Look out for the injured knight! Timings change for the movements, so check beforehand - summer was noon, 5pm and 6pm from memory. Many lovely churches to visit and stunning buildings to admire- just keep looking up to admire it all!Visited July 2023Written July 16, 2023
- JohnRegoParkRego Park, New York1,232 contributionsYou're going to end up here anyway, so you might as well enjoyCentrally located in downtown Munich, this square is a wonderful pedestrian-only spot to take in the cultural landscape of this city. The town hall is brilliantly designed, although not as old as you would think by looking at the ornament. The buildings that dot the square offer lots of tourist friendly amenities, but you would do better price-wise to step away from the center of town to patronize cafes or souvenir stands that are a bit more remote but easier on your wallet.Visited July 2023Traveled with familyWritten July 21, 2023

- Sebastian. C38 contributionsMust to goWe were in Munich two days. We stayed a hotel nearby the main train station. So it is walking distance to the old town. And this place is in side the old town, and it is a must to go. The architecture is amazing. All the details on the façade. We even google the story behind the creations, and it is fascinating to read the stories and seeing the old architecture at the same time. We highly recommend this.Visited August 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten August 7, 2023

Beautiful location but we first visited on a Sunday and everything was closed. We also went to the square for New Year's Eve. We got there at 9pm and nothing was happening. All the shops were closed. No music or entertainment or activities for revellers. Reservations are a must for restaurants near the square on NYE, of course. Fireworks are no longer allowed to be set off in the square so if you are looking for that on New Year's Eve in Munich, pick another location in the city. All that being said, Marienplatz is a must see on your visit to Munich.

This seems to be the central area in Munich with lots to see and do around this area. The main thing to see here is the Glockenspiel but there are plenty of museums and churches to look in.
We came by just after Christmas so they were packing up the Christmas market that was here.
Aside from the historical things to see here, there are plenty of food and shopping options. It is a must stop for someone who hasn't been here before to see some sights. There is also an information center close to the Glockenspiel entrance that we used here to get an idea of the surrounding area.

I knew Tues, Feb. 25 was Mardi Gras this year, but my husband and I just happened to be in Munich's Marienplatz for a short visit. Wow, were we surprised! Great fun, lots of music, costumed revelers, all the shops closed at noon, restaurants were open. We ate at Hofbrauhaus, and the bands paraded through to cheers and dancing. Who knew?!

Wife and I wandered over here on a Sunday and realized that the glockenspiel would do its special show while we were there. We debated leaving, but decided to stay and watch. We were not disappointed! If you are here during the limited times it does the full show, stop to watch and enjoy. It is marvelous to think how long it has been doing it and still functions. Plus there is a story it tells as it goes through its 10 minute “show”.

There are many attractions within walking distance of Marienplatz, so it is a great place to start your visit. During the holiday seasons, there are Christmas markets and Easter markets here and farmers markets at many other times throughout the year. I recommend scheduling your visit so that you can enjoy the mechanical Glockenspiel performance on the tower of the neues Rathaus. It begins at 11am and 12pm daily.

Marienplatz offers shopping, cafés and a whole lot of history.
The gem of this square though is by far the famous Glockenspiel.
This is not your typical clock, it is Its two levels of carved figurines that play out scenes from Munich's history to music.
Make sure to see what times it will be playing before you make your plans. The times vary between the seasons.
You can go to Youtube for a preview :-)

If you come to Munich, you must visit this place. This place is surrounded by beautiful and old buildings but restored .
The big building is the town hall. Twice in the morning you can watch a puppet show accompanied by music at the bell tower.
It is recommended on a beautiful day to rise to the top of the bell tower for a beautiful view of the area

To be fair, we had an image in our minds as to how Marienplatz would look, feel and sound. It's because of Gabriel Knight 2: The Beast Within (and yes, I realize how nerdy that makes me sound!)
At any rate, all the images we'd had in our heads went right out the window the second we stepped out of the Bahnhof and saw the millions of Christmas Market stalls in our faces.
NOT that I'm complaining! I was in Christmas Market heaven.
We visited Marienplatz several times over the course of our five-day stay. It was crowded - except for early in the morning, which was my favorite time to visit.
We did visit some of the "local" type stores on the Platz, but avoided the chains we know from home. It was easy to get lost and turned around with all the stalls and the side streets, but it was an amazing adventure.
Marienplatz served as a kind of "home base" for us while we were in Munich. It was comfortable, had a good variety of restaurants and shops, and had a wonderful vibe. I loved the history and the architecture, and how central it all was.
I would love to go back in another season, to visit the Platz without the market stalls (did I really say that?), and to see the area in sun and warmth. To, you know, see it as it was depicted in Gabriel Knight. Nerd alert!

Make sure you go up the tower of the new Rathaus (there is an elevator), and has a wonderful view and only costs 6 Euros. The Glockenspiel is captivating, there's the old Rathaus (now a Toy Museum), the Fish fountain, St Mary herself, and so many other sights and great places to eat. Great place too start any trip to Munich.

What train station near the Marienplatz will take me to Garmisch?
j0andphilip
Braunton, UK98 contributions
AS above answer. There are regular trains. Its worth knowing at the moment the whole of Germany, their government are giving all travellers including tourist a 7 euro ticket per person to travel by bus tram and train can purchase from Munich train station. We bought our tickets before travel from the UK and it costed us more as we didn't know.

I honestly don’t know but everything was “open” outside. They were very strict about showing proof of vaccination to gain entry to restaurants.
“Amalfi Coast /—-I’m planning on visiting the Amalfi Coast in September. We are planning on staying in Sorrento. What are the best boat tours from Sorrento to Positano and Amalfi? Thanks. ”

I would first say, please don’t travel at this time! There are too many variables with this virus and the unknown. That being said:
If you travel in September 2021 (😀) you will find many local ferries available to take you to different parts of Italy. There are a lot of local trips that can booked up once you are there. TripAdvisor and Expedia have excellent prices. I highly recommend Hop On Hop off busses in each area. You can travel via train or bus rather inexpensive.
Please reconsider postponing your trip- er on the side of caution

There many alternatives for a lovely boat trip on Amalfi Coast. I would recommend a full day trip to view the whole coast. Next you can choose to have a combined boat- bus trip as well to see some lovely places which not located on the shore, such as Ravello.
I have an 8 hour layover in Munich and want to meet a friend at the city hall and grab a quick lunch before heading back to the airport to catch my connecting flight. Is there a place at the airport to store my luggage?
Qamar M

Yes, Munich Airport has "Gepäckaufbewahrung" i.e. left luggage facility. Just ask the airport staff about its exact location. You can reach the city hall (Marienplatz) by S-Bahn directly. Takes roughly a little more than an hour, so far as I remember.

What is a nice hotel to stay at that is 5min. Or less walk from Marienplatz Square. Will only be there 2 days and want to be in the heart of everything!

Hello,
I stayed at the Europaischer Hof across the Main Station, Hauptbahnhof.
Many hotels around the area. Due to the proximity of the station and the comparisons, the rates are very competetive.
This place was really nice (adults only) and a short walk to Marienplatz Square...about 7 - 10 mins walk, straight. Make a right once you exit the hotel and keep walking. Take the escalators down when you reach it and the the escalators up at the other end and then keep walking.
Keep in mind that everything is closed on Sundays.
I took advantage of the walking tours at Marienplatz and have found them to be very informative.
After the first walking tour, I realized that it I was in the heart of everything, something that you are also looking for.

Hofbrauhaus is really close by to Marienplatz a few blocks in easy walking distance. I recommend you see the beer stein locker room on the 1st floor (really neat) and the upstairs hall (historical site) at Hofbrauhaus during your visit.

I think I read somewhere that from Marienplatz the S-Bahn S-1 to the airport splits in two at Neufahm so if going to Munich airport use only the wagons toward the rear of the train. Can anyone verify that or did I misunderstand.

So sorry, I booked my transfers via internet therefore I have no clue about the trains.
What about checking the Munich trains on line?
