This double cd does a more than adequate job of summarizing the legendary guitarist's career. But there's no way anyone will find this compilation satisfyingly consistent.
The disc opens with a few live songs from a then-recent concert. Fantastic opening! From there, the way this compilation is ordered may not please all Manzanera fans. Many of the studio tracks are from the period spanning his debut (1975) through the early 80's. In addition, there are a couple of token Roxy tracks (such as "Amazona"), and a few interesting collaborations with Tim Finn.
The flow is rough also due to non-English songs. But hey, that's Phil's heritage, which helped him forge styles that distinguished him from hordes of other axe-men. Not necessarily essential for fanatics, but good to own and then loan to someone to turn them on to Phil. Just make sure to explain that far too little of Manzanera's best guitar work with Roxy Music is present.
