Baseball Splits Conference Doubleheader With Farmingdale on Saturday

FARMINGDALE, N.Y. —  The SUNY Old Westbury baseball team split a doubleheader against the Farmingdale State College Rams on Saturday afternoon. The Panthers lost the first game by a score of 9-3. The second game was much closer as the Panthers won in extra innings by a score of 11-10.

Game One - SUNY Old Westbury (3) – Farmingdale State (9)

The first game saw an early lead for Old Westbury as they created some traffic on the bases in the first inning. The team got fortunate with as Mike Petrucelly was hit by a pitch which gave the Panthers a 1-0 lead.

The lead was short lived as Farmingdale State would answer in the bottom of the second and third innings scoring three runs taking a 3-1 advantage.

The Rams would then deal more damage in the bottom of the fifth inning, scoring six runs, creating a commanding lead of 9-1. It was a big game for Rams' hitters as all starters had at least one hit each.

The Panthers would tag a couple of runs in the sixth inning by way of a Mike Petrucelly two run home run. Petrucelly was a bright spot in the Old Westbury lineup, driving in every run for the Panthers. It was a difficult game for Panthers hitters who only had 5 hits compared to the 12 hits by the Rams.

Game Two - Old Westbury (11) – Farmingdale State (10) [10 Innings]

The second game was a slug fest, but it got off to a slow start for both offenses. Farmingdale State would take a 1-0 after the first inning, but both teams would proceed to go scoreless through the third inning. That would be the last time there was a scoreless inning for the next five innings.

It was a big day for Mike Petrucelly as he hit his second home run of the doubleheader, as he took the lead for the Panthers with a two-run home run in the fourth inning. It was Petrucelly's 11th home run of the season meaning he now currently leads the team in homers.

The power did not end there for Old Westbury who saw Nick Papageorge get in on the action hitting his third home run of the season in the fifth inning. Papageorge drove in three runs, adding to the lead 5-1.

The runs continued as the Rams and Panthers bounced multi-run innings off each other until the ninth inning where the score was tied 10-10.

In extra innings Old Westbury struck first as Zachary Horowitz hit his first home run of the season giving the Panthers an 11-10 edge.

It was a lead that the Panthers would not relinquish as Rob Manetta, who came into pitch in the eighth inning, would strand the tying runner at first base and won his third game of the year.

Old Westbury hitters turned it around in game two as the top six in the Panther's lineup had 7 hits and 11 walks. Nick Papageorge had a strong game with two hits, two runs and four RBIs. Old Westbury also saw standout performances from Mike Petrucelly and Mateo Martinez who both had a multi-hit/RBI game.

Up next for the Panthers is a trip back home for Senior Day at the Jackie Robinson Athletic Complex. It will be another Skyline Conference battle against the Manhattanville College Valiants on Sunday, April 28 at 12 PM. Manhattanville is eighth in the conference, and when the two played last year they split the series at one game a piece.
