Our visit to Mangaia was just terrific and has left us with wonderful memories. The Mangaia villas are great - a wonderful location, extremely comfortable, and the staff couldn't have been more helpful. The breakfast and dinners that they provided for us were feasts of local cuisine. They gave us a great tour of the island showing us so many beautiful and fascinating aspects - Mangaia is an incredibly interesting place and I highly recommend a visit.

We were the only people staying here, and our villa was clean and well-kept. Great location on a bluff overlooking the ocean, with steps leading down to the beach. We were here to do some birdwatching, but also enjoyed an island tour given by 'Papa Joe'. The woman in charge of running the villas did a great job of cooking good meals, as well as organizing activities and providing airport transfers. It's only a short walk to town, where Babe's store has whatever you might need for snacks, etc. The mosquitos are quite aggressive in the late evening, so probably best to eat dinner inside unless you use a lot of repellant plus long sleeves/pants. There is good Wi-Fi on the porch of the main villa.

Summary: We stayed for 3 nights over Easter booking out 3 of the villas. We were the only ones there. It seems the owner is trying to provide high end accommodation but missed the mark with some of the smaller details. There is not much in the way of shops on Mangaia so if you want to cater for yourself you have to bring all your food over from Raro.
The Pros: The villas were spacious and clean and overall very nice. All the people on the island were very friendly. We were able to hire a car (easiest transaction ever! Islander: "would you like to hire this car?" Us: "yes". Islander: "OK, $80/day"....hands us the keys and gets a lift home. This is truely somewhere to escape from the rat race. Beautiful location and amazing sunsets!
The Cons: All the sliding doors have deteriorated to the point we could bearly open/close them. There was huge holes in all the fly screens letting the pesky mozzies in. The kitchen equipment left a fair bit to be desired with the one "sharp" knife between the 3 villas blunter than a bread and butter knife. There were only saucepans in each villa but we were given a frying pans when asked if there was a BBQ we could use. The toilet in 2 of our villas didn't flush and being Good Friday it was impossible to find anyone to help us. After much searching we eventually figured out the toilets run off their own water supply and it hadn't been turned on, just annoying this wasted our first morning. Wifi did not work.
Suggestions: Considering the location (right on the beach front) it would have been nice if they had supplied things like beach towels, reef shoes, mask/snorkels but we still thoroughly enjoyed our stay without these.
Would I recommend this to anyone: absolutely!

Like all of the Cook Islands islands other than Rarotonga and Aitutaki, Mangaia has very few tourists. We were the only guests in this six one-bedroom ocean-front villa motel. Their next booking then was not until July 2015. The accommodation was good quality, and the motel manager was lovely, always smiling and helpful, Fresh fruit, fresh bread and cereal were provided for make it yourself breakfasts. The kitchen facilities were good, which is just as well as there are no restaurants on Mangaia. The motel does offer cooked diners. We brought our meals with us from Raro. Do NOT bring fruit or vegetables with you or the agricultural officer will confiscate them on arrival. There is limited tourism infrastructure on Mangaia as there are so few tourists. We were able to organise a cave tour. The roads on Mangai are not suitable for motor bikes, and you need a four wheel drive to drive on some of the roads. There is at least one 4 wheel drive available for hire but you need to book it before you get there. For a nice relaxing holiday with nothing to spend your money on Mangaia is very good. Nothing much remains of their culture and tradition (apart from what is written) as Mangaians after Christianity closed the book on the past. All marae are overgrown, and carving of their old gods is not allowed.

We went to Mangaia for a long weekend from Rarotonga. Staying at the Villas was an absolute joy from initial booking to the farewell from Caroline at the airport. Beautifully appointed villas in a stunning location with amazing breakfasts. We’ll be back.

All in all the villas are a home away from home kitchen , lounge , bathroom and large balcony nothing needed except groceries or Amelia will happily cook for you.
Breakfast was included and plentyful a fantastic spot to stay for the sunsets which never disappoint and the beach is only around 20 steps down.
