Steven M. My favorite movie of that year! Simply splendid. The acting and directing and writing are beautiful. My pick for Best Picture over Moonlight. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 10/08/21 Full Review Katie D Perfect movie for a gray day! This film feels a little long and the editing/cinematography could use some work, but the acting is award-worthy! It is definitely Casey Affleck's best work and also a wonderful performance by Lucas Hedges! Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/15/21 Full Review Hao Ian L A film of silences and unspoken emotions, it's a slow-burner that gradually unfolds with the characters grappling with grief in different ways. There are no grand pronouncements or cathartic moments of resolution, which is just the beauty of the film, Manchester by the Sea instead lingers slowly with viewers, it's a quiet meditation on the enduring power of grief, the complexities of forgiveness, and the tentative hope for connection even in the face of an overwhelmingly heartbreaking loss. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 04/23/24 Full Review Ruthless T Outstanding performance by Casey Affleck. People need to understand not every movie needs to have a happy ending or an ending that ties everything together. This movie really makes you feel a certain way for the characters. It's moving. Beautiful film. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 04/11/24 Full Review Michael Antony A Mikey's Movie Review: Manchester By The Sea (2016) A personal tragedy, a troubled man and an orphaned teenager might seem like the perfect combination for a feel good redemptive character study, but writer / director Kenneth Lonergan (Gangs of New York) has other plans… Casey Affleck (The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford) plays Lee Chandler a depressed, asocial janitor who becomes the legal guardian of his teenage nephew Patrick ‘Patty' (sensitively portrayed by Lucas Hedges), upon the sudden death of his brother. In a film about grief, guilt and the complexities of trying to recover from a heartbreaking event that has literally torn a family apart. Though the subject matter is tough, the dialogue isn't grim but witty and dry. While the natural way it's expressed generates genuine emotion between both the characters and the audience. Unsurprisingly the film also won Best Original Screenplay at the 89th Academy Awards. Beautifully supported by Michelle Williams (The Fabelmans) and Kyle Chandler (Friday Night Lights), Affleck is a revelation and truly deserving of his Best Actor Oscar. His portrayal is thoughtful, nuanced and engaging. Despite Lee's flaws we warm to him instantly. We understand his pain and want him to find a way to some kind of redemption… to say too much would be unkind, but it's fair to say the film avoids easy answers. Resisting the Hollywood cliché that with a bit of self-respect, love and steely determination you can get through and over anything… Tissues may be required! Mikey's Movie Rating: 5/5* Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/05/24 Full Review Georgan G The topic of long term grief is rarely addressed in film. The portrayal of such grief gives new meaning to intense drama. I am very impressed with the honesty of this movie. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/28/24 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating
