Maksimir Park – Beautiful and Peaceful

Maksimir Park is the greatest masterpiece of garden architecture in Croatia. Preserving its hundred-year-old oak forests to this day it is a great place to escape the city lifestyle.

TIP: MAKSIMIR IS ONE OF THE OLDEST PUBLIC PARKS IN THE WORLD, OPENED IN 1794.

Maksimir Park is the first public park in southeast Europe and one of the first in the world. For the same reason, it is the oldest public park in Zagreb.

Besides its dens hundred-year-old oak forests, the park consists of meadows, lakes and streams.

The English style park is also home to more than 100 bird species, specifically hole-nesting birds. The most significant being a spotted woodpecker (Dendrocopos medius), European endangered species.

Within the park you can visit the Bishop Haulik’s New Villa, Echo Pavilion (also known as Lantern-Temple), Gazebo, Swiss House, St. Juraj Chapel, Obelisk and numerous sculptures from all periods of the park’s history.

Zagreb Zoo is also within the park. It is located in the southern part of Maksimir Park. Adjacent to the park you may find the unfinished NK Dinamo stadium.

What can you see and do at the Maksimir Park?

Spend a perfect day outing with outdoor activities or a picnic with family and friends. Because of its size, five lakes, countless tracks and several large meadows you will find a refuge from the city buzz. Enjoy a good book, go jogging, explore the parks rich history or simply relax.

For a perfect family day, visit the Zagreb ZOO and one of Maksimir children’s playgrounds.

For romance walk around, find a quiet corner or relax by the lake.

The park is beautiful during all season, bet we do not recommend it during winter. On May 1st, the International Workers’ Day, you will find it crowded as it is an event space for unions and public speaking.

How to get to Maksimir Park?

The Maksimir Park is easy to reach by public transport, exit on the “Bukovačka” station.

Take the trams 11 or 12 from the city centre or ban Josipa Jelačića square. Go east (Dubec) till the Bukovačka stop. The entrance to the Maksimir park is on the northern side of the street.

Trams number 4 and 7 go from the Savski Most terminal to the Maksimir Park.

If you are leaving from the Zagreb Bus Station, take tram number 7 heading north.

If you are leaving from the Zagreb Train Station, take tram number 4 heading east.

Maksimir parking

The biggest public parking is located across the Maksimir Park near the western side of the Dinamo soccer stadium.

You can reach the parking lot from Donje Svetice Road by turning right on the stile immediately after the bus stop and before the traffic light intersection of Donje Svetice and Maksimirska Street.
