White is the spectrum...
Now, three albums in; our Karyn had firmly established herself as a Contemporary R&B performer of some resonance. Seriously. looking the way she did & sounding the way she did; she could sing random passages from any book in my library & pluck the come hither zithers of my heart-strings. Conspiracy theories about the Montauk project would've sounded wonderful from her golden voice. Perhaps, wisely, she kept grounded in more mundane; but, potent affairs of the heart. A pleasing mix of dance grooves & Quiet Storm follows & soothes. Hungah, "Weakness" & "Simple Pleasures" are personal favourites to put me in that special mood. Sexy & groovilicious, to be sure. Nice, very nice, doubleplusnice. Alas, it would be another 18 fallow years before Karyn would grace us with another long-player. Anyway, if you need a nerve tonic of romantic rapport, her slim discography is a recommended repertoire.

How can it be that albums like "Make Him Do Right" are mostly ignored by the public, while pseudo-artists sell millions of their mediocre albums? Well, the question remains unanswered but one thing I'm sure of and it's that Karyn White's third album is one of the better R&B albums of the 90's. Way before TLC entered their mega-successful stage of career with "CrazySexyCool" Karyn White had released this gem, that easily ranks as the singer's very best effort. With production duties from Terry Lewis, Jimmy Jam (well tried duo responsible for mega-success of Janet Jackson) and Babyface (probably the 90's most successful R&B songwriter and producer) "Make Him Do Right" sounds almost like "Greatest Hits" album, because every single song has hit written all over it. "Can I Stay With You" could have been huge #1 hit in tradition of other Babyface-penned ballads, but her record label slept on it. The same can be said of "Here Comes The Pain Again" and "Nobody But My Baby". "Hungah"-the album's first single should have been Top 10 hit at least, but again went unnotices mostly due to lack of any promotion from the label. Other uptempo numbers that remain vital after all those years are: "Simple Pleasures" and terrific "Weakness". There are times when "Make Him Do Right" starts to sound similar to Janet Jackson's "Janet." but even that comparision can be seen as a huge compliment for Karyn, who took inspirations from one of the greatest artists of that time. Even though "Make Him Do Right" finished her career, still after all those years it has lost none of its power. Good music lasts forever-simply said.

"Make Him Do Right" is definately the best of three Karyn White's studio albums. Actually, it's one of the strongest r&b realeses of the 90's although it never set the charts on fire or spawned any hit single. It's such a shame, that so many people seem not to remember Karyn and her beautiful voice. I think "Make Him Do Right" is one of the best kept secrets in the music world and it still sounds fresh and original after more than decade of its initial realese. Album consits of smooth, gentle r&b ballads (mostly penned and produced by Babyface), like "Can I Stay With You" (which ranks among the greatest r&b ballads in history with its killer, powerhouse chours and beautiful melody), "I'm Your Woman" or "One Minute" and more uptempo, funky numbers, like "Simple Pleasures", "Hungah" or "Weakness". There are no fillers here, so it means you can listen to the whole record without skipping some of the songs. Listening to this truly wonderful album you discover Karyn's strength, conviction and passion for the music. It will touch your soul and melt your heart away...and I guess that's what good r&b music should be all about. Bravo Karyn!
