This might be a nice place to walk through, but watch your budget. I wanted to try some dried watermelon. We decided to buy it, and the man scooped a large portion into a bag. I said it was too much. Then he kept having us try other flavors and it was all good, and it was dried fruit so how expensive could it be? Right?

We ended up with 5.5 kilos (13 pounds) of dried fruit and nuts at a price tag of $400.00 USD. Unfortunately, I didn't do the currency conversion until after I left the shop. A few minutes later I went back and tried to return the items, and they refused to take them back. They were speaking about me in Hebrew behind my back and one was openly laughing at me.

I felt completely swindled. $400 for dried fruit and almonds. LOL. I ended up leaving the goods at the store and am attempting to reconcile with my credit card company.

Not only am I potentially out $400 but it absolutely soured my whole trip to the degree that I haven't wanted to purchase another thing.

I've traveled a lot, and I'm sure I've been swindled before, but never to this degree. It was really upsetting. This is my 3rd trip to Israel, so it's not lack of experience. I was just too shell-shocked at the time to process what was happening.

Tourist Trap

There must be different prices for locals than those provided to tourists in English. Every shop we visited gave shockingly inflated prices. One place in particular, called The Halva Kingdom, gave us samples of pretty average halva and then claimed it was NIS 159 a kilo. That’s over $49 a kilo, or $22 a pound. That’s shockingly overpriced. Since there were locals in this market I must assume that there’s a Hebrew price and then there’s an English price. Pretty much sums up the place. We bought nothing and quickly returned to East Jerusalem.

Amazing but insane

Awesome but totally hectic experience. There seemed to be organized tours which were annoying because they blocked the movement of people, but also might be the way to go because they seem to be keen charging tourists a premium. Can leave a bad taste in your mouth. Consider making a list of what you want in advance as the experience can throw you off your game. I panic bought $170 worth of halva. Luckily it tastes amazing.

What a vibe!

Here you can find everything you want - food, smells and vibrant life in the daytime and vivid nightlife with pubs after the sun goes down. I visited the place twice while staying in Jerusalem and did not regret it. Try the Fish&chips eatery during the day - great food for a quite reasonable price.

Come here during the day and at night.

Depending on the time of day, be prepared for a crowd. I sometimes find it difficult to squeeze through all the people and the workers pushing or pulling crates. The most exciting time to come here is the Chanukah season at night. It becomes a whole different environment; the colors are more vibrant than ever. There's no way you can see everything in the market because it's impossible to navigate in a logical way. Don't wait to see everything before you make up your mind as to what you'd like to try. If you like halva, be sure to notice the free samples. Fresh halva is different! You can have a cup of coffee, freshly-sqeezed juice or an entire meal in the shouk.

Mouth watering fun foods

Machane Yehuda is a series of stalls where vendors sell mostly food, although there are a few other items sold, especially Judaica for tourists.

There are huge displays of candies, pastries, halva, fruits, vegetables, coffees,breads/rolls, ice cream.
There are also a few sit-down bars and eateries, but it’s mostly people walking through the aisles of vendors, more like a flea market in the states, but covered by a roof.

Your mouth will water just walking through.

If you don’t stop to buy, it will only take 15-20 minutes to walk through, but you *will* want to taste just about everything. It all looks so fresh and delicious.

It's always fun going to the shuk. especially if the frequent music performers are there. Boisterous and rowdy atmosphere. Great fresh seasonal produce, prepared foods. mediterranean style dips, breads ,cheeses, If you are a kanafeh fan ((filo dough dipped in honey/nuts or cheese..many stores sell it.) bourekas, meat, halvah, fish, and of course coffee grains beans and aromatic spices and much more. If you go at night - about 7 or 8 you will great end of day bargains.

Mahane Yehuda is as close to a must-visit as any market could come, simply delightful. It is actually not exceptionally large, but full of amazing stuff. The location is 15-20 minutes walk from the Old City, with the bonus of going through the very lively area of Ben Yehuda Street, one of the going-out centers of town.

Authentic bazaar-style market

I love walking through Mahane Yehuda! It’s a real, Middle Eastern style bazaar, with over a hundred stalls selling everything from fresh fruit to antiques to freshly ground Turkish coffee. It is a feast for the senses: the variety of colors of the merchandise sold, the mixture of sound from the vendors yelling out sales and the general hustle and bustle of a busy market, and the tastes. Oh, the tastes! Almost everything the vendors sell is fresh, and absolutely delicious. Many stalls have also been converted into very cool restaurants and microbreweries. I would personally recommend “the hatch”, a microbrewery that has some incredible food. Go, walk around, try some local delicacies, and enjoy. I know I always do.

Vibrant and colourful market to walk around or to ear

You must this market - which is vibrant, with myriad of colours from fruits, vegetables, spices and nuts, lively with lots of locals and tourists. You may come to shop or to eat. There are a number of inexpensive restaurants and bakeries and the market is crowded whether you come in the morning or evening
