Nice area for shops, restaurants, and architecture

We took the Charles Street trolley car from the edge of French Quarter, getting off at Felicity and walking a few blocks to Magazine Street. We only walked a fraction of the of the length of Magazine. We specifically selected the day of Champagne Stroll, with several stores serving champagne. There is a nice selection of boutique-style stores, highly-rated restaurants, and houses. The architecture is simply amazing, in particular on Bienville. See separate reviews of restaurants Justine and The Rum House.

Fabulous vibrant street - food; shopping; bars and coffee shops. Long easy walk with lots to see. Glad we stayed in this area it had everything within walking distance.

Walkable and great shopping. And Restaurants.

Old part of NOLA. Long street with pay to park is a must. Walk one hour and walk one hour back. Locals go here. Unique shops.

Long walk with plenty of variety

Caught the Charles St trolley out to Napoleon & then walked back to the French Quarter. While 3 miles isn’t really that long of a walk it definitely feels longer in the summer heat & humidity. Fortunately there are plenty of neat shops to duck into and cafes along the way where you can stop off to cool down and hydrate

Well, how do you review one long street?

Overall, a quaint stretch of shops, restaurants and bars, each with a different feel. Magazine street starts at Canal St. in the Central Business district where it looks like any other street in the area. As you cross the highway (overpass), you will move into the Coliseum Square area which is generally an eyesore, but there are a few divey bars and junk shops. As you cross Felicity, you move into the Garden district stretch which has more antique shops (rather than just junk), a few boutiques, cafes and bars until you get to about Louisiana, then it drops off into a mish mosh of uninspired businesses, pawn shops, until you get to Napoleon. Then between Napoleon and Jefferson, the cute boutiques pick up again, then come into full force after Jefferson. After about Nashville, it becomes residential and you enter Audubon park where it ends near the zoo. if you are into shopping, then this is the place to go. Decent prices, compared to the Quarter, although not cheap. Where lots of locals go to shop for the unusual, or meet friends for lunch or a drink. Generally safe, especially during the day, but exercise caution at night, depending on which stretch you are on. Parking can be found along the street itself or the many smaller streets off the main drag, especially on the river side.

Magazine St GREAT but avoid Kevin Stone Antiques

I was recently strolling along Magazine St looking at antique shops. Magazine Street is a wonderful street for strolling, looking at shops, munching, imbibing, etc. I was hunting for a particular period piece for my home. I entered Kevin Stone Antiques at 3420 Magazine St. and inquired about the style specific item. One of the attendants said they did not carry such things and homeowners of that particular style used other items for decoration. When I expressed casual disbelief that homeowners were furnishing a style specific home with items not specific to that style he said "If you are going to have that attitude i'm not going to speak to you any longer". He then proceeded to 'busy' himself with his computer. When I apologized that I meant no offense and that I was simply surprised by the idea, he continued to pretend that I did not exist and was not speaking directly to him. His partner also took the same attitude. I promptly collected my spouse and left with a 'thank you' (no response) and 'I hope you have a good day' (no response). I was absolutely amazed at the childish behavior on display in this shop. If you are in the market for antiques or just out for a stroll on Magazine, avoid this shop completely. They have nothing you could want so badly as to put up with such malevolent behavior.

Avoid Kevin Stone Antiques on Magazine

I am often in New Orleans and am very familiar with most of the antique shops along Magazine Street. Strolling magazine is a wonderful way to spend a dayin New Orleans. I was unaware of Kevin Stone antiques, but saw a trumeau mirror that looked nice on 1stDibs and decided to take a chance and purchase it. Well, $5500 plus additional shipping later the mirror arrived. It was clearly NOT authentic 18th century (as was claimed) and had been altered very badly. I called Kevin Stone later and asked if I could possibly exchange the piece for a store credit. REMEMBER: I did not ask for my money back (even though the mirror was not what it was said to be). I very kindly asked if I could pick out another item. He VERY RUDELY said that he did not accept returns under any circumstance and would not exchange the piece. He barked "I am in the business to make money", then hung up on me. AVOID THESE RIP-OFF ARTISTS! There are many wonderful antique dealers along magazine, Kevin Stone and his nasty partner are not one of them.

It is not as great as the city likes to make it seem
I was on my own one day and heard that Magazine Street was a fantastic way to spend a day of shopping. After all it was 6 miles of shops! Yeah, right. I walked from the French Quarter to catch a city bus on Canal Street. Fine, no problem. As the bus was traveling on Magazine Street I kept waiting to see the nice cafes and shops. When it was obvious that what I was seeing was what I got, I decided to give it a try and got off the bus. The nice shops I went to were locked and you had to ring the doorbell to be let in. Wow, that was welcoming and made me feel safe. The sidewalks were cracked, uneven and at times hard to walk on. It was such a pitiful experience that I only stayed about 40 mins and caught the bus back to Canal. Don't be misled by the city's promotions. It is not as wonderful as they make it seem.

Quirky without the kitschy
Such a neat street- unique shops that are neither touristy or only for hipster locals. Wide variety of stores- retail, secondhand, vintage.

Love to visit Magazine Street for the stores and restaurants

Every time I go to New Orleans I try to visit Magazine Street at least once. I usually walk along Audabon Park from St. Charles, then walk back towards the Quarter. It has several shopping areas, and they vary in charater. I sometimes visit the Whole Foods, then cross the street to Dirty Coast, which I think has the most creative tshirts and bags in the city. (DirtyCoast.com). Farther along there's a great bead shop, and some great specialty stores. Buy local! If you can, eat at Lillette. My only gripe is that the bus to/from Canal doesn't run often enough.
