Name Meaning

Some characteristic forenames: Italian Salvatore, Pasquale, Rocco, Umberto, Amerigo, Angelo, Carlo, Domenic, Ennio, Gaetano, Gerlando, Gino. French Laurent, Camille, Girard.

Italian: from visconte, a title of rank (medieval Latin vicecomes ‘deputy of a count’). Unusually (since most noble families took their surnames from their estates), the surname was sometimes of literal application, but without doubt it is also in part a nickname for someone who gave himself airs and graces, and in part a metonymic occupational name for someone in the employ of a viscount. This surname is also found in southern France.
