On How Life Is

On How Life Is is a glimpse into the mind of a musician that has been through it all. Macy Gray is not shy about sharing her life and struggles with her fans. This album is packed full of musical gems and I like to think that each song was tailor-made for someone in particular.

If you’re looking for some tunes to get you through your day, this may just do the trick. Although the album does a fantastic job of mixing slow and fast songs, I found myself enjoying the slower songs more. This is not to say that I didn’t enjoy some of the faster tracks, but I found myself listening to those songs less often. To me, it was just an added bonus that they were included on the album.

Macy Gray is well-known for her distinctive voice and her passionate stage shows and this album provides an accurate representation of her shows.

The Songs

Why Don’t You Call Me

This song is one that I found myself listening to over and over again. The lyrics are simple, but the message is delivered with so much soul and emotion. The chorus of this song will get stuck in your head for days on end. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing because it’s a catchy tune! It’s not uncommon for me to find myself singing along to this song as I’m driving down the road.

Do Something

The song starts off with the guitar and soon the piano joins in. Then the trumpets join in to give it that classic jazz feel. Right as you get started into the song, Macy’s voice comes in and stops you dead in your tracks.

Caligula

In this song Macy is really giving it her all. I found myself listening to this song frequently during my runs. This was a great song to get me pumped up and ready for the day. The lyrics and message are powerful and let you know that you’re not alone.

I Try

This is a fast-paced song that has an R&B feel. I really like the lyrics and was able to relate to them. This was another one that I found myself listening to often during my runs. The lyrics are short and simple, but powerful nonetheless. It’s perfect for someone who needs something uplifting and positive to get through their day.

Sex-o-matic Venus Freak

This is a fast song with a very unique sound. I really enjoyed the extended instrumental part at the end of this track.

I Can’t Wait to Meetchu

This is another of my favorites, but it’s not for the faint of heart. It’s real and raw, and its lyrics are very powerful. This was a great song to play after a breakup because she is saying everything that you need to hear but are too afraid to say yourself.

Still

The third single of the album is raw and tackles the emotionally driven topic of an abusive relationship. It’s a must listen.

I’ve Committed Murder

I’ve Committed Murder is an experimental song that offers a very different perspective. The sounds of other instruments and the way that they are mixed into this song give it this jazzy feel.

A Moment to Myself

This is a song that I found myself listening to frequently during my work day. This is a nice relaxing track that offers a glimpse into the mind of someone who has been through it all and just needs some time to herself. I could relate as well and this song really spoke to me.

The Letter

Wrapping up her powerful album is The Letter. A great song to end the album with, it’s a great way to send you off with a positive message. I think that this song is powerful for anyone who needs encouragement while still being able to put their own situation into perspective.

Wrap

Macy Gray’s On How Life Is is a powerful album that offers music that everyone can relate to. I think that this album will appeal to anyone who is looking for something a little different than the same old songs on the radio. Each song has its own merits and will appeal to you in some way.

Macy Gray Biographical

I’ve always been a singer, but I was never interested in being a recording artist. It happened when my husband asked me to make a demo tape for his friend and record producer Kenny Gamble. He loved it and asked if I could write some songs with him, so we did that together for about 3 years.

Over the years, Macy Gray has sung backup vocals for several artists including Al Green, Michael Jackson, David Bowie and Prince. She has also volunteered at an AIDS hospice in Los Angeles.

In her early years, Macy Gray was a backing vocalist for Al Green and Michael Jackson. She had provided background vocals for David Bowie’s song “Tonight”.

She has also recorded a duet with Prince, “Love, Sex and Money”. She was selected by Prince to sing on his 2006 album Planet Earth.

Macy Gray is known for her unique vocal rasp and the high tones in her voice which she has been described as sounding like “a human kazoo”,

Although Gray has released two albums, she has primarily been a backing singer for other artists.

Gray married Eric Benet in 1999. They have two sons whom he previously publicly referred to as “brothers.” Gray was diagnosed with progeria, a form of rapidly progressing aging, in 2000. She had the gene for progeria or Hutchinson-Gilford syndrome. It’s a condition that occurs when one of the parents has a chromosome change within the same gene altering it. She was diagnosed with the gene due to having children before the age of 30.

Gray has four sons from her first marriage. Coincidently, Eric Benet had an eight-year-old son, Ziggy (whose real name is Johnnie) from his marriage to actress Kim Fields of TV sitcom Martin when he and Gray married in 1999. Her progeria was diagnosed shortly after her marriage to Benet.
