Ryan Bennett and Louis Appere — The draw at Cambridge took Northampton to 50 points for the season

Garry Monk's first game as Cambridge head coach ended in a draw with Northampton.

Monk was appointed on Monday after over three years without a management role, and Jon Guthrie's late header denied him a debut victory.

His Us side went ahead with their first meaningful attack on 16 minutes, Elias Kachunga firing in after neat interplay between Liam Bennett and Jack Lankester.

Northampton almost scored direct from a corner before keeper Jack Stevens punched Marc Leonard's delivery away on the line, while Kachunga could have added a second when volleying Lyle Taylor's cross wide with the last action of the first half.

The Cobblers pressed hard for an equaliser after the break, with Liam Moore's header deflected off target and Ben Fox shooting wide from the edge of the box just before the hour.

Visiting boss Jon Brady was booked by referee Declan Bourne, seconds before his side drew level eight minutes from the end when captain Guthrie beat Stevens to the ball and headed home Leonard's free-kick.

Good point Cobblers. 50 points, not bad considering most 'pundits' has us down for relegation, same with the social media pundits from certain league one clubs, all but one has us down for relegation certainties.

Well if Garry Monk didn’t know how big a job he has taken on he does now. Glass half full is that we probably don’t need many more points to be safe. Glass half empty is that we don’t appear to be showing any signs of being good enough to actually get them. Very poor flat performance today and I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t extremely worried.

Northampton were by far the best team in an awful game, the super Us got a really good point there,points make prizes, what a summer we need now, so much dead wood in the team, time for a proper clear out and see what Mr Monk is made of

One shot on target and no corners? Sort of concerned myself. Too soon to say but all the fixtures look difficult. Maybe the last berth calling, unless we can suprise some teams.

Monks experienced enough at best to skin another League One season but Def top end Div 2 worst scenario.

Definitely felt like 2 points dropped by the Us. Northampton didn't carry much threat but equally didn't make many mistakes. After scoring Cambridge should have pressed home advantage and killed the game off with a second goal but sat back too much. Still too slow on the ball, lapses of awareness and too much hit and hope. Be good to occasionally play it along the ground to Lyle.

Nobody rates The Cobblers, that's why we've done reasonably well this season. We don't create loads of chances in a game, but what we have is a spirit, grit, and the determination to get something out of a game. After a couple of dodgy performances, it sounds like we got a bit of solidity back into the team. Hoskins, Sowerby and McWilliams all building up to full fitness.

Another good point on the road. 50 points up and safety pretty much assured. Fist half was pedestrian with no urgency. Went up a couple of gears in the second half and deservedly took the point we deserved. #shoearmy

Yet again Brady gets his team to bounce back from a hammering. Should have gone on to win the game after the amount of pressure we put on the home team in the 2nd half. Achilles heel defensively at left back yet again rises its head in the shape of the shortcomings of Brough.

Posh A v Posh Reserves was always gonna be a mismatch of terrible football, an atmosphere of a crypt and a desperate realisation by the watching fanbase that the best place to watch scintillating football is by going to see the boys in blue down at London Road. 0-1 5-0,2-0,5-1 and 1-0. 14 goals 1 conceded. Wembley awaits and promotion still in. Why do you still call us 'rivals' ?
