You Can't Afford the Luxury of a Negative Thought: A Book for People with Any Life-Threatening Illness--Including Life

Rate this book
You Can't Afford The Luxury of a Negative Thought is an upbeat, accesible book about the power of positive thought -- and about how negative thinking can wreck lives. Negative thinking is seen as a debilitating illness that will slowly kill your spirit -- and for some people lead to actual physical disease. Happily though, this is not a doom-filled book at all! The authors show how Eliminate The Negative -- spend less time thinking 'down' and negative thoughts. / Accentuate The Positive -- spend more time focussing on the positive things in your life. / Latch On To The Affirmative -- enjoy each moment! Packed full of inspirational, funny, and moving quotes. This book was written in part specially for those who have been diagnosed with severe illness. Negative thinking drags you down -- whilst a truly positive approach will have a positive effect on your whole self -- thus promoting good physical health. Though this book is a terrific inspirational read for anyone looking to recover health, it's essentially a big book about positive thinking and is certainly not limited to an 'ill' market!

Uncreative psychobabble. The book is about two inches thick in paperback, but only because about half of the pages contain a one-sentence quote in a box. The author also devotes several pages to selling himself and his other work.

I did like the two pages on fear, including Eleanor Roosevelt's quote:
"You gain strength, courage, and confidence by every experience in which you really stop to look fear in the face. You are able to say to yourself, 'I lived through this horror. I can take the next thing that comes along.' You must do the thing you think you cannot do."

Though the idea of the book was not new to me - if negative thinking can cause illness and unhappy life, positive thinking lets you reach peace and happiness - i found some great tips in how to really find those positive things in your life and in yourself.
i also loved the idea of how the book is arranged. authors really made quite an effort to match particular exerpts to quotes. and most of those quotes were moving! i did write them on a piece of paper and hanged on the wall so they would enhance my positive thinking.
it is a kind of book you must come back to from time to time.
you get what you think. no matter you think negative or positive. so better think positive!

the front covers suggests it was written for the person with a "life threatening illness" (even life itself). this book is very long, repetitive and spaced out like poetry. it reads like a book of affirmations, almost religious in the moral decisiveness of his advice. it might be helpful for a reader dipping their toes into self-help, but there are much better books out there for gaining perspective & changing self-talk.

Lots of advice here for changing the way you think. Why would you want to do that? Well, being stuck in a rut is never fun, even if you don't realise it, and it's all too easy to fall into one. This book explains why it's a bad idea to think negatively, and then goes on to show you how to overcome the habit.

This book is changing my life. If you are a perfectionist, and/or have trouble making decisions and setting limits, and/or have strong emotional reactions to everyday life, and want to get a handle on yourself, this is the paradigm shift!

I thought the book used excellent quotes from many sources and was disappointed that those quotes failed to inspire the authors. The book is worth reading for the quotes alone.
