Speculative animation of NASA's uncrewed Lucy spacecraft in flight. Not AI.
Launched in 2021, Lucy is on a twelve-year mission to eight different asteroids. It is slated to visit two main belt asteroids as well as six Jupiter trojans--asteroids that share Jupiter's orbit around the Sun. All asteroid encounters will be flybys only.
The mission is named after the fossilized skeleton of a female Australopithecus afarensis discovered in Ethiopia in 1974.
