ATTENTION COLLECTORS! Check out this long-lost collection of unreleased Nazz studio recordings created by a burgeoning young songwriter/producer by the name of Todd Rundgren! Taken directly from the original master acetates, this box set collects the originally conceived 1968 rough mix of Nazz's sophomore album "Nazz Nazz" created by Rundgren as he begins to learn the production techniques that made him the highly acclaimed producer he is today! Also contains unreleased, alternate mixes from 1967-1968 of tracks such as "Hello, It's Me," "Open My Eyes" and many more not available anywhere else! Includes a full-color booklet featuring liner notes and rare photos!

Now, returning to earth, the caveats are not every track (aside from being Mono mix) is drastically different from the official studio recordings and you should be aware unlike magnetic tape, acetate, is subject to wear and degradation over time with resultant tics & surface noise. And that has not been processed out of these recordings; its probably a good thing...preserving those raw dynamics & sonic depth they would lose if processed with digital de-pop and compression.
I have heard the entire collection (thanks for the prompt ship, Amazon) and revising this review. First, I will add that the Single Acetates CD #3 is my favorite of this box set, having already acquired Mono pressings of the LP's I am pretty familiar with those mixes. These singles are mainly demos, and to these ears, the audio is very robust for their age. Below are some brief comments highlighting my impressions of contents found in certain tracks.
CD 1 -12" Acetate SIDE A/B - MONO
Forget All About It - (no "jet" effect at beg. & end)
Only One Winner - (Todd lead vocal)
Meridian Leeward - (no Organ)
Some People - (Before the Stewkey vocal remix a Gilbert & Sullivan-esque tune, Alt. verse and chorus vocals with exaggerated "hayseed twang" plus timing and lyrical differences, no slide guitar.
Rain Rider - (Alt vocals, no Organ)
Resolution - (Todd lead vocal, no Vibraphone)
Featherbedding Lover - (the lead guitar parts are faint in the mix, other parts come to forefront)
Take The Hand - (Todd all vocals)
How Can You Call That Beautiful? - (Todd vocals, cough at intro, this mix same as in Todd Sings CD trk 3)
SIDES C/D
Loosen Up - Mono mix, very similar to track used on Nazz III
/ Good Loving Woman - Only of interest to the die-hard, long version of studio chatter, clowning around - coughing - blues parody?
Sing A Song + Reprise - /Unused track also found on other collections as one song or with Good Lovin Woman edit sandwiched in between.
Plenty Of Loving /The last verse is different from NAZZ III track, the mix is Mono and better IMO.
Letters Don't Count/ Pretty much the Mono mix with odd Todd harmony "punch in".
Kiddie Boy/ No loud horns, they are faded way back here.
Christopher Columbus/ Maybe an early Rough Mix or cut as demo, Stewkey vocal.
Hang On Paul /Another rougher mix, the Guitar doubling or harmony is barely audible here.
Not Wrong Long / no Organ
You Are My Window /More damage increased noise, while the instrument tracks seem finished Todd's vocals do not, like a work in progress.
A Beautiful Song /has worst quality on the CD they had to splice the stock Mono LP to finish the track. The concept of using extended jams/guitar solos debuted on record here would re-emerge in TR's early solo efforts.
ACETATE SINGLES - None are bad, just highlighting my favs!
Gonna Cry Today #1 /Todd & his guitar, Lead & Harmony - Sweet!
Old Time Lovemaking /Todd vocal, No horn Arr. Listen to the composer brewing up a new tune...Shades of Runt !
One One Winner /Todd, Piano, Lead & Background, early version of a classic.
Under The Ice #14 /To my ears, better than the Nazz Nazz record. Demo-like & power-packed.
Back Of Your Mind /If there was a track that best showed-off their youthful exuberance and drive this is it - Yeahhh!
I stand by my high marks and highly recommend this recording!
