Deadly collision happened on Woodley Avenue between Victory and Burbank Boulevards

LAKE BALBOA, CA, (May 03, 2024) - The L.A. County Department of Medical Examiner has identified the bicyclist killed in a hit-and-run collision in Lake Balboa, a neighborhood in the San Fernando Valley region.

Hit and Run posterJose Pineda was fatally struck by a hit-and-run driver Friday night on Woodley Avenue in Lake Balboa, a neighborhood in the San Fernando Valley region, officials said.

According to police, a silver-colored vehicle speeding southbound on Woodley Avenue struck 41-year-old Jose Pineda, who was riding a bicycle. The incident happened between Victory and Burbank Boulevards Friday around 8 p.m. Tragically, Pineda died at the scene due to injuries.

The motorist did not stop at the crash site and continued south on Woodley.

Anyone with information about the case was urged to call the LAPD’s Valley Traffic Division at 818-644-8000.

The incident is under investigation.

CRASH INVESTIGATION NEEDED

A motorist involved in a hit-and-run crash is required to remain at the scene and notify law enforcement officials. Failure to do so would attract criminal charges and other legal consequences.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), approximately 16.7 percent of fatalities are caused by speeding motorists.

Candice Bond, an experienced bicycle accident attorney, said an independent probe should be conducted to protect a victim’s rights in cases such as this one.

“Road conditions, visibility, and lighting are all possible contributing factors that are considered and must thoroughly be examined,” said Bond, a Managing Partner with Bond Legal.

“An accident reconstruction team is sometimes needed to help piece together what happened. All of these resources are necessary for helping clients receive monetary compensation for damages or a loss following a collision,” said Bond.

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

Pending the investigation, the family members of Jose Pineda may be entitled to a wrongful death claim. Family members of wrongful death victims may seek damages for loss of companionship, pain and suffering, and emotional distress following a catastrophic accident.

“The stress and sorrow can be extremely overwhelming after losing a loved one in an accident,” said Stefano Formica, of counsel at Bond Legal.

“We understand just what families are forced to go through, and having their rights protected is vital. A wrongful death lawyer will stay updated on the official investigation and help ensure that their legal rights and best interests are protected.”
