Hablamos con Ryan North de su nueva etapa al frente de Los 4 Fantásticos

Con motivo del lanzamiento del primer número de Los 4 Fantásticos de Ryan North y Iban Coello nos ponemos en contacto con el guionista para hablar de este relanzamiento y lo que pueden esperar los lectores de esta nueva etapa. Tras haber leído los primeros números publicados en Estados Unidos solo nos queda aplaudir el espectacular trabajo que guionista y dibujante están realizando, a la altura de una colección histórica como Los 4 Fantásticos.

En primer lugar, me gustaría preguntarle por el momento en que le propusieron escribir Los 4 Fantásticos. ¿Qué se le pasó por la cabeza en ese momento?

La emoción. Es emocionante escribir personajes que conoces desde hace tanto tiempo que no recuerdas la vida sin ellos. Los Cuatro Fantásticos son esos personajes para mí.

¿Cuáles son sus principales referencias de ciencia ficción para sus historias de los 4F? ¿Cómo aborda el componente de ciencia ficción de la serie?

Es curioso, hay una distancia entre la «ciencia de cómic» y la «ciencia real», y yo intento mantenerme en la línea que separa ambas. Quiero que haya restricciones realistas sobre lo que la tecnología puede hacer, pero también quiero que los FF vivan en un mundo de alta ciencia y posibilidades infinitas. Así que, para mí, aunque no escribo ciencia ficción dura, al menos es «ciencia ficción de cómic dura», si eso tiene sentido. Piensa en «grandes ideas con superhéroes fascinantes».

En mi run Sue es la líder del grupo y es un papel en el que encaja con naturalidad. Reed es definitivamente el inteligente, pero aún tiene grandes áreas de la vida en las que su inteligencia no puede ayudarle, o le defrauda. Ben es el alma del grupo, Alicia es la creatividad y Johnny es el divertido. Obviamente, cada uno de ellos es mucho más que eso, pero me pediste que los resumiera en pocas palabras.

Los lectores te conocen sobre todo por obras humorísticas como Squirrel Girl. ¿Tendrán tus historias de F4 algo de ese sentido del humor? ¿Qué papel crees que puede desempeñar el humor en la serie de los Cuatro Fantásticos?

Sí, ¡seguro que habrá algo! Sobre todo en torno a Johnny, ya que es el miembro más divertido, y en el número 3 veremos mucho de él. Pero, a diferencia de Squirrel Girl, esta no es una serie de comedia, así que, aunque es divertida, queda relegada a un segundo plano frente a la ciencia ficción, la aventura y la resolución de problemas. Todo esto para decir que ES un libro divertido, y un libro divertido también, pero con la aventura y el drama un poco más alto de lo que estábamos (por lo general) haciendo en Squirrel Girl (que me encanta.)

Los 4 Fantásticos tienen un fuerte componente de ciencia ficción, pero también tratan sobre la vida cotidiana y las relaciones familiares. ¿Cuál de las dos te resulta más fácil de escribir: las aventuras de ciencia ficción o el drama familiar? ¿Su carrera en los 4F será más bien terrenal o todo lo contrario?

Creo que un poco de ambas cosas. Cuando estoy ideando la historia, la ciencia ficción y la trama me parecen lo más fácil de escribir, ya que se trata de las cosas más geniales que puedas imaginar que suceden en secuencia. Pero cuando la escribo, las relaciones son lo que más me interesa, porque es cuando intentas dar vida a la historia y averiguar por qué ocurre lo que ocurre. Y a veces no es así, y la trama tiene que cambiar porque si no las relaciones y los personajes no tienen sentido. Así que, como la mayoría de las cosas, es un baile y una conversación con tu yo del pasado.

Echando la vista atrás, ¿cuál es tu época favorita de los Cuatro Fantásticos? ¿Y cuál crees que se parece más a las historias que has escrito para la nueva serie?

Dios mío, es una pregunta imposible. Hay tantas cosas buenas de cada época del libro -ideas grandes y pequeñas, desarrollo de personajes, relaciones entrañables, ese tipo de cosas- que es imposible elegir. Espero que nuestra serie tenga al menos un par de momentos que la gente recuerde del mismo modo.

Los personajes secundarios siempre han desempeñado un papel importante en Los Cuatro Fantásticos, pero en los últimos años la familia se ha ampliado y ahora es tan importante como los miembros principales. ¿Continuarán personajes como Alicia Masters, N’Kalla y Jo-Venn desempeñando un papel importante en las historias de los F4?

Sí, absolutamente. Todos los que has mencionado y más.

En este sentido, ¿ampliará la nómina de personajes secundarios? Si es así, ¿qué miembro de la familia Richards se beneficiará más de tener nuevos personajes secundarios?

Tengo algunos planes al respecto, pero es complicado, porque el elenco ya es muy grande, y no quieres añadir más a menos que ese nuevo personaje aporte algo que los personajes existentes no aportan. Springfield no necesita a Ned Flanders ni a Otto el conductor de autobús, ¿sabes? Así que todo lo que puedo decir aquí es que esperemos y veamos.

¿Qué villanos de los 4F crees que merecen un poco más de atención y, por tanto, tendrán un papel relevante en tus historias?

Los FF tienen una de las mejores galerías de pícaros del cómic, tanto que básicamente se han convertido en la galería de pícaros del Universo Marvel en su conjunto. Y eso tiene sus ventajas y sus inconvenientes. Las ventajas son que se desarrollan más y se vuelven aún más asombrosos, pero las desventajas son que no quieres sobreexponerlos o tocar el mismo terreno. Pero eso no significa que no veamos a algunos villanos de corte más profundo en las historias, y por supuesto, también a algunos famosos: el número 2 trata sobre (ALERTA DE SPOILER) ¡Los Doombots!

El dibujante de este nuevo volumen de F4 será Iban Coello, uno de los autores más espectaculares y prometedores de Marvel Comics. ¿Cómo es trabajar con él? ¿Qué destacarías de su trabajo?

Iban es genial y estoy súper contento de poder trabajar con él. Dibuja escenas de acción increíbles, con tanto peso, fuerza y drama, que tengo que impedirme enseñaros algunos paneles porque me metería en problemas. Pero son TAN BUENOS. Y también ha dado en el clavo en los momentos más tranquilos de las historias: hay un montón de actuaciones divertidas entre sus personajes. Creo que te va a sorprender su amplitud.

No sé si eres consciente de ello, pero cada vez que Albert Monteys sube dibujos de personajes de Los 4 Fantásticos a Internet, todos sus fans suspiran pensando en que dibuje un número de la serie. Habiendo trabajado juntos en la increíble Saughterhouse-Five, ¿hay alguna posibilidad de que le veamos haciendo un número de relleno de la serie?

Soy consciente de ello, siempre les doy un like. No he hablado con Marvel al respecto, pero obviamente me encantaría hacer algo con Albert, ¡estuvo fenomenal en nuestro libro de Matadero Cinco!

RYAN NORTH INTERVIEW ABOUT FANTASTIC FOUR

First of all, I would like to ask you about the moment you were asked to write The Fantastic 4. What went through your mind at that moment?

Excitement! It’s a thrill to get to write characters you’ve known for so long that you don’t even remember life without them. The Fantastic Four are those characters for me!

What are your main science fiction references for your 4F stories? How are you approaching the science fiction component of the series?

It’s funny – there’s a distance between «comic book science» and «actual science» and I’m trying to ride the line between the two. I want there to be realistic restrictions on what technology can do, but I also want the FF to live in a world of high science and infinite possibility. So for me while I’m not writing hard scifi, it’s at least «hard comic book scifi» if that makes sense? Think «big ideas meet fascinating superheroes.»

Without going into details, what do you think of each member of the original quartet? What makes each of them unique and special in your opinion ?

In my run Sue’s the leader of the group and it’s a role she’s fitting into naturally. Reed’s definitely the smart one, but he’s still got big areas of life where his intelligence can’t help him, or lets him down. Ben’s the soul of the group, Alicia’s the creativity, and Johnny’s the fun one. Obviously there’s way more to each of them than that, but you asked me to sum them up in a few words! 🙂

Readers know you mostly for humorous works like Squirrel Girl. Will your F4 stories have some of that sense of humor? What role do you think humor can play in the Fantastic Four series?

Yeah, there’ll definitely be some! It’s mostly around Johnny, since he’s the funniest member, and we get to see a lot of him in issue 3. But unlike Squirrel Girl this isn’t a comedy series, so while it IS funny, that takes a backseat to the scifi and adventure and problem-solving. All this to say it IS a fun book, and a funny book too, but with the adventure and drama turned up a bit higher than what we were (usually) doing on Squirrel Girl (whomst I love.)

The Fantastic 4 have a strong science fiction component, but they’re also about everyday life and family relationships. Which of those two is the easiest for you to write: the science fiction adventures or the family drama? Will your 4F run be rather grounded or the opposite of it?

It’s a little of both, I think? When I’m figuring out the story I find the scifi and plot the easiest to write, since it’s all just the coolest stuff you can imagine happening in sequence. But when writing it I find the relationships are the thing that interests me the most, because that’s when you’re trying to bring the story to life, and figuring out why it happens the way it does. And sometimes it doesn’t, and the plot has to change because the relationships and characters don’t make sense otherwise! So like most things it’s a dance, and a conversation with your past self.

The book will be a little more grounded than before – in that a lot of the stories are taking place on Earth, so literally on the ground – but there’s also some really big stories that take the characters to places they haven’t been before. Issue 5 and 6 are two of them – but I won’t spoil them, so just know big things are happening!

Looking back to the past, which one is your favorite era of the Fantastic Four? And which run do you think is the most similar to the stories you’ve been writing for the new series?

Oh gosh, this is an impossible question. There’s so much great stuff to grab from literally every era of the book – ideas big and small, character development, relationships you loved, that sort of thing – that it’s impossible to choose. I’m hoping our run will have at at least a couple of moments that people will remember in the same way.

Secondary characters have always played an important role in The Fantastic Four, but in recent years the family has expanded and is now as important as the main members. Will characters like Alicia Masters, N’Kalla and Jo-Venn continue to play an important role in the stories of the F4?

Yes, absolutely! All of them you mentioned and more.

In this respect, will you expand the roster of secondary characters? If so, which member of the Richards family will benefit the most from having new secondary characters?

I have some plans here, but it’s tricky, because the cast is already so big – and you don’t want to add to it unless that new character brings something the existing characters don’t. Springfield doesn’t need to Ned Flanders or Otto The Bus Drivers in it, you know? So all I can say here is to wait and see. 🙂

Which 4F villains do you think deserve a little more attention and, therefore, will have a relevant role in your stories?

The FF have one of the best rogue’s galleries in comics, so much so that they’ve basically become the rogue’s gallery for the Marvel Universe as a whole. And that has pluses and minuses! Pluses are they get more developed and become even awesomer, but minuses are you don’t want to overexpose them or hit the same ground. But that doesn’t mean we don’t get to see some deeper cut villains in the stories – and of course, some famous ones too: issue 2 is all about (SPOILER ALERT) Doombots!

The artist of this new F4 volume will be Iban Coello, one of the most spectacular and promising authors of Marvel Comics. How is it working with him? What would you highlight about his work?

Iban is great and I’m super stoked that I get to work with him. He draws incredible action – scenes with such weight and power and drama – that I have to stop myself from showing you some panels here because I’d get in trouble. But they’re SO GOOD. And he’s been really nailing the quieter moments too in the stories – there’s a ton of fun acting between his characters. I think you’re going to be surprised at the sheer breadth of him!!

I don’t know if you are aware of it, but every time Albert Monteys uploads drawings of Fantastic 4 characters to the Internet, all his fans sigh thinking about him drawing an issue of the series. Having worked together on the incredible Saughterhouse-Five, is there any chance we could see him do a fill-in issue of the series?

Oh, I’m aware, I give them a like every time. I haven’t spoken to Marvel about it but I would obviously absolutely leap at the chance to do anything with Albert – he was phenomenal on our Slaughterhouse-Five book!
