These two albums represent early '70s country-rock at its finest. The hits "Joanne" (about a cow, folks, not a girl) and "Silver Moon" are here, along with several remakes from the Monkee days ("Calico Girlfriend," "Nine Times Blue," "Hollywood," "The Crippled Lion," "Conversations" (a.k.a. "Carlisle Wheeling"), and "Listen to the Band," which was the tenth Monkees single). The Monkees' original versions can be found on the MISSING LINKS series, or on other reissues. There is also a brief instrumental called "First National Rag," a lovely version of the old standard "Beyond the Blue Horizon" (marred by intrusive sound effects), Patsy Cline's "I Fall to Pieces," and several others, including an unreleased bonus track called "First National Dance."
All three "two-fers" in this series are worth having, but this is probably Nes' best solo work (with the possible exception of 1992's Tropical Campfires ). The sound quality is magnificent, far outshining Nesmith's domestic Videoranch release, Complete First National Band Recordings . Definitely a must-have.
I dig into the remastering and the technical side of things like source material and handling of the master.
This set consists of 2 albums poorly remastered from god knows what source.
The first album, "the blue one", really suffers here with an amature noise reduction disaster complete with whistling artifacts.
The original album sounded bad on the post dynagroove pre dynaflex thick orange label RCA vinyl.
It was a bad master. Dont make it worse.
What was the Quad 8 track made from. Perhaps it was better.
CD companies rarely do any homework or research when putting together a package.
Steve Hoffman is an example of a person who cares and does a stellar job!!! I wish he was consulted on this project.
The new pictures are nice but the CD is an audio product.
This is forgotten time and again.
Maybe there is a better CD out there. There are more to choose from.
This one is ok if you dont care that much about audio quality. ie mp3
I have gotten off track though. What I really wanted to say in this review was that you can download all three of Micheal Nesmith's albums with his country rock group The First National Band at Apple's itunes, for about ten dollars each. This includes the two albums that are on this disc (Magnetic South and Loose Salute) along with the third, Nevada Fighter. I know you don't get an acutal CD or booklet but once downloaded you can burn it to a CD and it is cheaper. With Nesmith now on my ipod I listen to him all the time. Just a heads up to another option out there.
(Check out LA Turn Around with Burt Jansch. Jansch is completely different, but with these same two musicians, and Nesmith’s good taste, the pairing is a singular experience.)
