Editorial Reviews
Deluxe digitally remastered and expanded CD edition of the 1986 debut album from the self proclaimed `fourth best band in Hull' including a bonus CD that contains b-sides, rarities, radio sessions, previously unreleased tracks and more. The Housemartins originally released London 0 Hull 4 in October 1986 and it surged to #3 in the charts. It features the perennial favorite 'Happy Hour' alongside other singles 'Flag Day', 'Sheep' and 'Think For A Minute'. The album is housed in the sumptuous Deluxe Edition packaging and the booklet features liner notes from Phill Jupitus, who got his break supporting the band during his Porky The Poet days. 34 tracks. Universal. 2009.

The Housemartins remain my favorite "80s Nerd Alternative" band and will never go out of style in my house. I was reading Ayn Rand and Nietzsche while I was listening to "Get Up Off Our Knees", and the combined effect has lasted well into my adulthood.
I originally owned this on cassette, and the CD includes several bonus tracks that make it worth every penny paid - most notably, the gospel/a capella rendition of "He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother" that never fails to bring a tear to my eye while I'm belting along with it in the car. It's on tracks like "Heavy" that P.D. Heaton and his bandmates redeem themselves for the conniving way they've driving socialism deep into your brain with their pop hooks. At their core, the Housemartins are not about politics, they're about people, and their affection for humanity must be the root of the beautiful harmonies and charming pop melodies that put this album in my top 5 of all time.

I immediately indulged in the free Autorip (CD not yet received) and was transported back to the Birmingham Odeon, circa 1984, when they supported Blancmange. It was the start of a beautiful relationship.
This album is up there with all time classic debuts. You may not agree with some of Paul Heaton's politics/views, but you can't deny the lyrics are well penned, the tunes are catchy and the harmonica interludes are divine.
The mid 80's were a difficult time for many and records such as these helped get us through.....A good buy that reminds me of visiting Hull in the 80's and staying at the Newland Homes....So for me its definitely Hull 4 London 0......
