Inspired by The Manchester Passion, Liverpool Nativity employs the city's great musical heritage as the soundtrack to a contemporary music drama set in a fictitious state, a tale as relevant today as it was 2,000 years ago. The live event tells the intimate personal story of a pregnant young girl set against a backdrop of political tension and unrest and stars a host of well- known Liverpool actors and personalities.

Anyone remember this? God, it was cringe!
Unlike Manchester Passion, Liverpool Nativity seemed less interested in the religious meaning and more keen on blowing its own trumpet in time for the following year's Capital of Culture status, all set off with Jennifer Ellison dressed like a giant silver dildo with an unfortunate cameltoe issue as a WAGish Angel. I remember watching it on TV and feeling embarrassed for the performers - only to get a text from my mate who lived on Matthew Street at the time saying "why is Onslow off Keeping Up Appearances shouting 'Yer sound Liverpool! Yer sound!' over and over again on my doorstep?"
Staging a live televised production of The Passion Play has become a regular event on Dutch television, the BBC haven't attempted anything like this since...and I think this is the reason why.
