I would recommend this live concert to any and all D'Angelo fans and anyone who really loves good funky soul music. It is a little funny that it is entitled "Live in Oslo" when throughout the concert D'Angelo references Stockholm, Sweden and the crowd cheers every time. Either D'Angelo and the concert goers don't know where they are or they are in fact in Stockholm, Sweden. With Ahmir Thompson on drums (D'Angelo references him during the concert) the Soultronic band is really tight and the live recording is very clear. As far a the CD packaging... there are no liner notes, so if you like to get information on the players, venue, or any other information you are out of luck. That aside, this is a great opportunity to hear D'Angelo really hyped up and delivering a great concert. There are some really cool interludes with music referencing Funkadelic and Herbie Hancock etc. Many of the songs have different takes spun on them than what you hear on his studio albums. It really gives the concert a raw feel. It's obvious he is excited about what he does, and that makes it all the more better. I have a feeling this concert may be from the early 2000's, and I swear I hear Anthony Hamilton singing at one point during the concert. Point blank, you definitely want to pick up this gem.

First, the concert appears to be in Stockholm and not Oslo or at least someone thinks they are in Stockholm. Other than that minor point the rest of the set is a knockout IF (1) You like live recordings and (2) You like D'Angelo. The recording of the set reveals a strong R&B slant to this neo-soul artist with D'Angelo conjuring up the spirit of Prince and James Brown on several cuts. The band, Soultronic, is tight and well beyond competent. The studio cuts are naturally extended and fleshed out in this live setting. The recording also features some well recorded bass guitar. Did I mention the band is tight and the audience receptive? Again, this are the things one finds in a live recording when compared to studio productions. Hats to D'Angelo for this double CD modern R&B jam!

Although most of this is D'angelos old material...it was SO good, n just as relevant now, that im loving his vast mprovement over already amazing skillz. Add his newer mastery on guitar...that JESSE JOHNSON from the Time is with him, (they r playing nose-2-nose, note-4-note yall)!!!! UTube it, then get this cd! Check him out cuz for 12 years, D'angelo wuz honing his chops and dont blieve all the drug stories. If they r true..hes more genius than i know!!! Traet yourself if u love D'angelo!!!

I LOVE this 2 CD set: D'Angelo spices up his hits with new beats and a great back-up band. He sounds fantastic, and he has truly made his songs come back to life (not that his original CDs have EVER LACKED LIFE!!!!) on this live album. Highly recommended for those of us who love the greatest soul man alive.

He had better come correct when he does release his new CD or he will be written off as a one-time wonderer. it will be a shame, because he really has a style and voice. this CD is O.K. It is the normal I Need a Gig CD to make ends meet.

Could "somebody," "ANYBODY," write the set list on here? Please? So "I" can assess "if" I will purchase. Thanks SO much. I think comment sections should include songs set lists for "live" recordings. IMHO...

Sickeningly talented individual and band but beware; it's not what it says on the tin

I'm a long time Amazon customer but have never written a review before. Being a long time 'D' fan however, this CD has compelled me to write my first ever review, so that other fans of real music can be assured exactly what they're getting when they buy this CD. The packaging is misleading to say the very least.
I caught D' Angelo at the first of his Brixton gigs in February this year and due to the picture on the front, I thought I would be buying a similar set to that gig, minus any songs he played from his forthcoming (hopefully) new album. I was not.
It is entitled 'Live in Oslo' but is clearly recorded in Stockholm Sweden (as can be heard several times throughout the CD) and is from circa year 2000 with his band at the time The Soultronics. Obvious differences from this tour and the tour in 2012 include the versions of the songs played and on this CD Ahmir 'Questlove' Thompson is on the drums whereas Chris 'Daddy' Dave was banging out the rhythms in 2012. This was actually a little bit of a disappointment for me as for all I think Questlove is immense, Chris Dave is just phenomenal (check out Robert Glasper's album Black Radio for confirmation). There is still however the sublime Pino Palladino on the bass (Don't think D'Angelo would even consider using anyone else live) so no cause for concern there!
For all of it alluding to be something different though, I still cannot rate this at anything less than 5 stars due to the mastery and usual effortless brilliance by the man himself and his world class band. Think I Wanna Talk to Sister (listed as Soultronic on the CD) and the 15 minute musical extravaganza of Jam Jammin' are particular standouts for me. The sound quality is not brilliant as you would probably expect but is still very good. A D' Angelo 'bootleg' though is still way better than what mere mortals could produce with all polish and production in the world.
So for all of its false advertising, this CD for me is still a must have for any fans of real music from a living legend who is simply of the most talented musicians to have ever walked the planet. If it was actually from the 2012 tour however I think I would want to be giving it 6 stars!
Cheers

Nicht Oslo sondern Stockholm
Reviewed in Germany on October 5, 2019

I'll keep this short and sweet, I received this just today and I love it already upon 1st listen.
The live show that this was recorded from was magnificent and the sound is extremely clear, it feels as though you are there.
A must buy for all D'Angelo and soul fans alike.
You won't be disappointed.

This concert is amazing from start to finish. It is genuine, playful, organic soul and funk at it's very best. Could even rival some of Prince's best concerts and that is a tall, tall order...
Buy it, listen to it and enjoy!
