Sagebrush Round- Up Host 2024 WV Country Music Hall of Fame Inductions | WV Country Music Hall of Fame Ceremony | By Sagebrush Round-Up | I walked through a county courthouse square on a park bench and old man was sitting there. I said the old courthouse is kind of run down. He said, no, it'll do for our little town. I said the old flagpole is leaned a little bit. That's a ragged old flag you got hanging on it. He said, have a seat. And I said, Al, is this the first time you've been to our little town? I said, I think it is. He said, I don't like to brag. But we're kind of proud that You see, we got a little hole in that flag there when Washington took it across the Delaware. And a gut powder burns the night that the Francis Scott Key set watches it right and say, can you see? And it got a bad rip in New Orleans. With Packingham and Jackson tugging at its seams. And it almost fell at the Alamo Beside the Texas flag that she waved on though. She got cut with a sword at Chancellorsville and she got cut again at Shiloh Hill. There was Robert E. Lee, Borregaard, and Bragg and the south wind blew hard on that ragged old flag. On Flanders Field in World War one She got a big hole from a birth of god. She turned blood red in World War two. She hung a limb and low a time or two. She was in Korea, Vietnam. She went where she was sent by her uncle Sam. She waved from our ships upon the briny foam and now they've about quit waving us back in her own good land here. She's been abused. She's been burned, dishonored, denied, and refused. And the government for which she stands is scandalized throughout the land. And she's getting thread there and she's wearing thin. But she's in good shape with a shape she because she's been through the fire before and I believe she can take a whole lot more So, we raise her up every morning. We take her down every night. We don't let her touch the ground and we fold her upright. On a second thought. I do like to brag because I'm mighty proud of that ragged, old place The future of your business? Those who served on the committee were co-chairs, David Hahn and Debbie Hudson, Lisa Janoski, Bert Arbogast, Ronnie Vanderguff, and our dignitarian adviser Linda Longstrath. Other than the co-chairs, the committee members serve a term of three years due to the COVID-19 pandemic and not having a class of twenty twenty-one, we have decided to have one more year with these fine figs. Ladies and gentlemen, may I have a round of applause for our dedicated nomination committee for the class of 20 twenty-four. And if you don't mind, I don't want to make Al stand here any longer. I'm going to skip over to his and then I'll go back. Now to honor our 20twenty-four Hall of Fame inductees, first, mister Albert Anderson. Albert or Al as he is affectionately known was born in 1937 in Osage, West Virginia. Al first started singing in 1959 at the age of 22 and has been going strong ever since. Al first started singing with the Falcons and was with them from 1959 until 1962. From there, he went to play with the collegiates from 1965 until 1980. One of the highlights of Al's career was when he went to Hollywood, California to record a song called What Are You Doing New Year's Eve for Billy Ward in the Dominoes? After returning from California, Al continued to perform at bar mitzvahs and weddings and at other venues throughout the next 13 years. He also got the honor of being able to sing our national anthem at many WVU football games. 1980 until the early 2000s, which is quite an honor. Al loves to perform and will perform anywhere that he is asked. Ronnie McDowell, Nashville artist, has had Al perform in his shows as well. Al says that some of his greatest moments of his career are being able to open for such acts as brothers, the Marvelettes, James and Dean, Beau Didley, and Dion in the Belmont. And I congratulate you. I didn't know you did all those things. So, I'm wearing honor. 65 years, you know. I've been very fortunate. Please. God gave me those vocal cords and and you know I used to come here, you know, I used to have a chair here and finally, I got those chubby checker legs done. At least one of them. So, I just got that done on Wednesday. I didn't know if I was going to make it tonight but you know, this is such an honor. I and I told the folks at the at the hospital. I said, look, I got it. When Wednesday said, I'd be out here on Thursday because I got that Hall of Fame going to come up on Saturday. So, but I appreciate all of you that's come to all the dances and affairs that that I've done throughout the years and it's been my pleasure. From Jim Fletcher and Rich Laish, they they introduced me up here some time ago. Probably, I don't know how many years ago. A long, a lot of years ago and I've been coming up here ever since and I just appreciate everybody that has supported me coming up here and I love that old-time rock and roll and some country too. You know, thank you all so much. Thank you. Okay. I just want to say just quickly that this lady has been, when I sing songs, she's one of the few people that can join in with me and singing those songs and that's always been a blessing to hear. When I hear a voice over there, I said, yes, we in here, girl. Damn. Honor. What an honor. Thank you for allowing me to sneak out in there. He just had a knee replacement as he had said. He was in the hospital and they wanted him to stay an extra day and he told him, no, I gotta be out of here. I'm being inducted into the Hall of Fame. So, thank you for being able to be here. We also need to quickly recognize two national acts that were inducted into the West Virginia Hall of Fame and Museum at their particular shows and were unable to attend our formal induction ceremony. They are little Roy Long, Little Roy Lewis, and Lizzie Long and Kevin and Debbie Williamson, co-founders of Williamson Branch. Little Roy Lewis and Lizzie Long always leave the crowd wanting more in our spectacular entertainers. Little Roy Lewis learned to play the banjo at age six and USA today called Little Roy a banjo master who is an American picker. Elizabeth Long or affectionately known as Lizzie started out playing the piano and is now a master of the fiddle guitar auto auto harp, bass, bandeau, and mandolin and it is an accomplished vocalist as well. Jack has also recorded several vinyl records. Jack had paused his musical career after moving to Fairmont but upon meeting Deputy Sheriff Donnie Leonard and discovering their shared love for music, Donnie asked Jack to come and hear his band perform. After he refused to start playing again, Jack was shocked when Donnie announced over the mic that he was coming up to play a song. Jack did and that was the start of his music career in Fairmont. So, many thanks to Donnie Leonard, Cindy Falbow plays the drums and also does vocals. She has an absolutely beautiful voice and has played and sang with many bands as well including Jack and Cindy and friends, Girls Night Out, Love Them, Pee Wee Austin in Old Country, The Last Resort Band, Morgan Ridge, The Century House Band, and Ray Howman, and Wheels of Country, just to name a few. Cindy began singing in her church choir at the age of fourteen. She says that Donnie Leonard was also instrumental in getting her to perform. In two thousand six, Donnie urged her to sing a song with them and she performed Ann Murray's Could I Have This Dance and has been singing ever since. Cindy also plays as part of the house band in Florida every Friday and at the Moose Club. During the spring, summer, and fall, Cindy loves to continue performing in West Virginia and especially at the Sagebrush Round up. Give a big hand to Marissa and especially Pam Howdershelt for doing our pictures. She does photos for us every year and she does a phenomenal job and we just love her to death. So, along with Linda Longstreth, Pam, if you want to pick out one of these flowers, it's yours. So, that concludes our ceremony. You are free to walk about a little bit before we get ready for the show. Check out the Hall of take as many pictures as you want and just enjoy yourself tonight. Thank you.
