Product Description
Product Description
Billy Joe Shaver is the quintessential country songwriter, but that s just a big word that doesn t do justice to the honest, raw intensity and outpouring of heart and soul in his lyrics. Over 50 artists have recorded his songs, but nobody does it better than Billy Joe, and that s why this show is so important. Recorded on August 14, 1984, Billy Joe holds back nothing. There s the grit, there s the attitude, there s the defiance. But there s also the intimacy, the poetry, the stories.

I'm not to proud to admit I've gotten teary eyed listening and watching this. It's debated about Roy's death , but either way it's very sad to think of him leaving way before his time. His " Messiah will come again " and " Sweet Dreams" is especially powerful and emotional.

He does his own vocals on this performance - OK, he's not a great singer but it means more time performing
upfront guitar, and I never did greatly like the rather smooth vocalists he featured in his bands anyway.
It is a short gig at 32 mins, but this is quality and not quantity.
Nobody plays guitar like Buchanan did. It is just fingers (no plectrum), a Fender Telecaster and a Fender combo amp with a good reverb unit - and from this he creates a huge variety of sounds and techniques with immense expression in his playing. No pedals, no heavy distortion - just the punch and clarity of a Tele.
Unsurpassable.
