Product description
These previously unreleased live may 1968 recordings from the electric theatre in Chicago can be regarded as works in Progress. In real time in front of an audience, Tim (accompanied by an unidentified bass player and his trusty Spider-Man Carter C.C. Collins on congas) is basically thinking out loud as he moves from one musical and/or lyrical idea to another during this Chicago performance. Mastered by Bill Inglot, the songs include early versions of "sing a song for you", "gypsy Woman", "Dolphins" And "happy time". The booklet features annotation by Pat Thomas, based on interviews with Lee Underwood and Larry Beckett.

Is it as good as 'Dream Letter; Live in London 1968', which was recorded a few months later? No, that performance was nothing short of incredible. For anyone just discovering his music I would recommend that before this one, but for long time fans of this man's extraordinary music this is absolutely essential. There are minor issues with the sound quality, for instance a background tape hiss is noticable during the quieter moments but is in no way intrusive. Considering the age of this recording it sounds remarkably good. The performance itself is so good that I doubt that the slightly less than perfect sound will impede your enjoyment.
I really should also mention the brilliant support from percusionist C.C. Collins and the unnamed bassist who somehow manage to supply the perfect backdrop as Tim spontaniously drifts from one song to another as the fancy takes him. No mean feat I would imagine.
The double CD contains excellent sleeve notes from Pat Thomas with background information supplied by Lee Underwood (Tim's long time guitarist and friend).
Any fan of Tim's unique talent need not hesitate in adding this to their Buckley stash, it seems the bottom of the barrel is still some way off. Let's hope there are further releases on the way.
We find Tim in the company of longtime sideman Carter C.C. Collins and an unknown bass player playing a range of songs that should be appealing - 'Sing a song for you'? 'Danang'? Yes please. But the string of songs that follow seem to lose their identity with Tim deconstructing these songs and playing them all rather similarly and - dare I say it - a bit boring. Take 'Big river' for instance, that great Johnny Cash song which doesn't get off the ground, or the badly performed 'Hi-lili, Hi-lo'. The second cd is a bit better with the welcome 'Dolphins', 'Happy time' and 'The father song' but ends with an interminable version of 'Wayfaring stranger' (16+ minutes). Well.
It's all nicely packaged, featuring a little booklet which includes an essay in which lyricist Larry Beckett and the ubiquitous Lee Underwood get to answer a few questions. The sound is fair.
The cd cover states 'A live album of idea sketching!' which is a nice way of saying that this isn't exactly Tim's peak performance. Completists are going to want this anyway, but if you're not you should turn to other far better live recordings by Tim Buckley.
Bill Inglot & Dan Hersch are both involved in the mastering here so you can be sure of high quality here. The two vinyl record set & two CD set both sound great. Get both if you can. Life's too short to miss out on Real Music, don't you know.
Now all we need are the incendiary 1970 'Starsailor Band' Concerts & 1975 'Starwood' Concerts

Music 4 stars by the way.
