The Dead Kennedys, despite how this may make singer Jello Biafra feel, are icons. The group, like no other American band I can think of at the time, mixed politics and humor (biting humor, but humor nonetheless) in a way that not only educated, but was fun to slam dance to. The group has since disintegrated into lawsuits (amongst themselves and brought on by others) and commercialism, but in its heyday it was a tour de force.

"Live at the Deaf Club" is a perfect example of this.

Not only do you have classics like "Kill the Poor (Disco Version)," "Holiday in Cambodia," "Viva Las Vegas," and "Police Truck," but also little-known gems like "Back in Rhodesia" (an early version of "When You Get Drafted"), "Gaslight," and different mixes of "Short Songs" and "Straight A's." If you are a Dead Kennedys fan, this is a goldmine. If you are wondering what the fuss is about, this is a good place to start.

This release is timeless, and is essential to any punk music library. The rest of you can stick with whatever trash is calling itself punk these days. This is from a time when the label actually meant something.

Product was represented as the official Manifesto release - it is not. The original release has extensive liner notes about this historic show with the band performing as a 5 piece with 6025, which this does not. The original release has cool packaging - this is a cheapo generic CD burn with generic cover, and no information at all about the show, or the band. Had I known this, I would not have bought it.

The show itself is fantastic, and if you're a DKs fan, you really need this. However, if you want to know the history of this show, as represented in the original release, don't bother with this version. Search out a used version of the original release, as I now will be doing.

A good show from a band just getting its sound together

Recorded in the spring of 1979, this album catches the DK's in a rather unpolished state. Many of the songs (especially Kill the Poor and California Uber Alles) are much slower than the studio versions; it appears these guys really tightened up their chops by the time they recorded Fresh Fruit For Rotting Vegetables. On the other hand, Ill In The Head sounds amazing, and Holiday In Cambodia also kicks a$$. Overall, this is a great addition to your collection if you are a serious Dead Kennedys fan.

However, this CD is not without its flaws. for one thing, the booklet sucks; it's basically a weak attempt to imitate Jello's classic collage posters and booklets from the old records, but without any of the ironic, sarcastic wit. I'd have much preferred some liner notes with recollections from band members, and photographs from the show.

Also, there's the issue of Jello Biafra's voice. As any DK's fan knows, Jello's voice was so "nasal" that he made Brian Ferry pale in comparison; be prepared for some extremely shrill, whiny vocals on this recording. True fans won't be put off, but newcomers may not be able to get past that sound.

Overall, this is a must-have for fans. I would not receommend starting a Dead kennedys collection with this album, though.

The title sums up what I think about this band - at least what it was prior to their fall-out after the scandal. This live album is quite the gem. Even though this show took place a little over five years before I was born, I still can get a feel of what it might have been like to sit in the audience of a Dead Kennedys concert. It's that good. Plus, it's the original 5-piece lineup with Jello, East Bay Ray, Klaus, Ted, and 6025! And it includes the never-before heard song Gaslight. This is a good cd. Is it essential to your DK collection? Probably. I know for a fact I don't regret spending money on it.

despite how you may feel about the dead Kennedys lawsuit, this is a great album of wonderful rarities and a glimpse of the time they'll never return. it is truly a shame that the great message of the dead Kennedys was overshadowed by a frivolous lawsuit. That said if your conscience will let you this is a great dead Kennedys album to have, if you're not willing to purchase you can always find a copy of skateboard party which should be the equivalent of this, doesn't have everything but it is a great live album itself.

Great band forever tarnished

I will preface this review by saying it only gets a good rating based on the music and ideas of Jello Biafra. It is great to hear these previously unreleased songs, although I would feel less dirty if I bought a bootleg. If I had to rate the integrity, it would receive a zero. One will discover that the songs "Straight A's" and "Short Songs" were previously released on "Give Me Convenience or Give Me Death" and the quality was better. This is because Biafra and Alternative Tentacles did not release this; his spineless, money-grubbing ex-bandmates did. You will find their lousy attempts to bilk as many dollar bills out of thier legacy on Manifesto Records. They advertise "New Artwork!" and "Digitally Remastered!" to hook die-hard fans into purchasing lame Winston Smith rip-offs and sound quality that one would be hard up to distinguish from the original recordings. It is sad that Ray, Klaus, and Peligro would resort to such cheap marketing ploys to recycle the ideas of their former frontman. They are clearly just trying to gain publicity for their pathetic reunion despite their claims of 'doing it for the fans.' I am not just saying all of this because I am embittered by their twisted lawsuit against Biafra-check out the reunion for yourself! Go to their new website and read how much they love themselves! It would be funny if it didn't cast such a dark shadow over an otherwise highly respectable reputation. Biafra was the brains and talent behind most of the DKs work, and these new releases prove it-why else would they not write any new music? Worse yet, without Biafra, they have become one of the least respectable punk bands ever. Even stooping so low that they have shamelessly okayed the censorship of their own songs in video games and public performances.

...whether this release is "essential" for your collection, a desperate (corporate?) cash-grab or a miraculous feat of analogue sound engineering, you're missing the point (and a chance at some pretty cool albeit nostalgic enjoyment). What "Live at the Deaf Club" does is capture the sound, spirit, promise and irreverence of DK as they were approaching their peak. Regardless of all the good - and bad - that happened so shortly (and sadly) soon after, tonight the band is tight, the set is solid, the sound is clean (all things considered) and Biafra is his usual smart, sharp, weird self. Sounds like it was a great gig...

Very good sound quality. It's not the most impressive set because it excludes too many classic DK songs that you see in other live recordings/bootlegs and the tempo is a little lacking - trying to stay in tune because they were conscious of it being officially recorded. But as well as the great sound quality, this does have the advantage of having captured some never recorded songs. So, good for fans who already have a lot of DK material and are looking for some rarities.

Die Streitereien zw Jello Biafra und dem Rest der Truppe mal außenvor, dies hier ist ein historisches Dokument mit einem der ersten Auftritte der Gruppe und das noch in 1A Qualität. Was will man mehr, zumal sich die Band in guter Spiellaune befand und sich auch fast alle Klassiker von "Fresh Fruit..." drauf befinden. Und schon allein die Coverversionen von the Honeycombs und the Beatles wären ihr Geld wert.

Vinyl-Punks werden vielleicht drei Stücke, Straight A's, Short Songs und Police Truck, vom Live-Sampler "Can you hear me? - Music from the Deaf Club" kennen, ganz sicher einem der originellsten und besten Live-Sampler der frühen Ami-Punk-Ära. Hier sind nun diese drei Stücke zusammen mit zwölf anderen in ausgezeichneter Live-Qualität zu hören. Der Sound ähnelt dem der frühen Singles und die Kennedys sind in hervorragender Spiellaune zu hören. Die Stücke werden zum Teil leicht angejazzt vorgetragen.

Dass diese Deaf-Club-Aufnahmen ihren ursprünglichen Charme des frühen Punks bewahrt haben, sehe ich nicht als Makel.

Wer also die Kennedys vor Peligro mag, sollte hier zugreifen.
