You pretty much know what to expect when Masterpiece visits the 19th century. But Little Dorrit stands at the high end of a very lofty list of period-piece achievement.
It's hard to imagine how this happened in the course of such an otherwise mindful endeavor. And yet "Little Dorrit" is still rewarding, for the long journey, if not for the final stop.
If you'd like to see a melodramatic TV movie about the Bernie Madoff scandal, you'd probably be better off seeking out Little Dorrit on DVD.
One of the best dramas of the year.
Claire Foy is strong yet vulnerable as the titular Amy Dorrit, her steadfastness to a less than grateful family, and a less than responsive Clennam, coming across as something better than masochism.
"Little Dorrit" is particularly apt and enjoyable at this moment in history because the story focuses intently on something deeper and more universal than real estate bubbles or bank runs: unfairness.
The performances are simply outstanding at every level, beginning with the incredible work of the great Tom Courtenay as William Dorrit.
"Little Dorrit" is the closest TV has to a sure thing: a relatively short-term investment with a satisfyingly large payoff.
It's much more entertaining and exciting than it sounds on paper, largely due to the enthusiasm of everyone involved, especially screenwriter Andrew Davies, a model of impish exuberance, who seems finely tuned to the letter and spirit of Dickens.
With a stellar cast and a fine adaptation, Little Dorrit is absorbing and entertaining.
