The British police drama Line of Duty left viewers hanging after the shocking conclusion of season 6 back in 2021, but will there ever be a season 7? Debuting in 2012, the police procedural follows a dedicated Detective Sergeant who is transferred to the Anti-Corruption Unit of the Central Police Force, where he uncovers wrongdoing within his own ranks. Eschewing the usual structure of a police procedural, Line of Duty stands out because of its focus on characters and ongoing storylines. The series debuted on BBC Two, but was eventually upgraded to the flagship BBC station in 2017.

Across its years on the air, Line of Duty has garnered almost universal praise from critics and audiences alike, and the series currently holds a 96% score on Rotten Tomatoes. Season 6 was meant to be the final outing for the beloved cop show, but the disappointing finale had many asking for Line of Duty season 7. The response to the finale was so poor that fans even began putting forward a "fake ending" theory in which the season 6 finale was actually a clever ruse to drum up interest in the future of the show.

Line Of Duty Season 7 Is Not Confirmed

Line of Duty Season 6

Even after several years of teases, season 7 of Line of Duty has yet to be confirmed by anyone involved with the show. Buzz began almost immediately after the so-called finale, with hints and clues being dropped by cast members. In September 2023, Martin Compston who plays DS Steve Arnott, revealed that the crew and ensemble have a group chat that is hosted by show creator Jed Mercurio. In the report by Metro, Compston revealed that the name of the group chat was mysteriously changed to "Line of Duty 7" insinuating a seventh season. Unfortunately, that cryptic clue has yet to be matched by an official announcement.

Though it is difficult to say since the season isn't officially confirmed, the cast of Line of Duty season 7 would likely be very similar to that found in season 6. Though he is no longer in charge, Adrian Dunbar would most likely return as Ted Hastings since he has been the glue that held the show together. Additionally, Kelly Macdonald could return as Joanne Davidson, alongside Martin Compston as Steve Arnott and Vicky McClure as Kate Fleming. Supporting cast is a bit less solid, since things tend to fluctuate from season to season, but depending on the storyline, the series has the opportunity to bring in big-named guest stars.

Line Of Duty Season 7 Story Details

Line of Duty Season 6 DS Ian Buckells

The Line of Duty fake ending theory has gained widespread attention online, and it could actually dictate how the seventh season goes if it ever comes to air. It was pretty clear from the finale that the Buckells reveal wasn't really the whole story when it came to H's identity, and AC-12 could find themselves in the middle of an even bigger conspiracy as they untangle the web. Or, the series could consider the H mystery solved, and introduce an all-new corruption storyline for Hastings and the gang to root out. Regardless of what the story of Line of Duty season 7 is, it's clear that six seasons just wasn't enough.
