I don’t really care for Caiden at all. I get his type, but he’s not interesting like Zayde. He is a complete jerk, and not in the bully turned good guy way. He’s just annoying. He treats Winter like garbage. I get it somewhat, with his past and hating her mother, but why would he think she is anything like her mom when she was raised by her dad and had no contact with her mom until recently? I felt like that was a hole left by the author and not fleshed out well.
I could maybe be on board with Caiden if Winter wasn’t such a doormat. She doesn’t stand up for herself. At. All. She let’s this dude walk all over her, and just is ready to get it on any time he so much as breathes on her. It’s pathetic and hard to stomach. I am all for girls being independent and getting their’s like guys do, but don’t be so easy on a guy who literally hates you. Have some backbone, and then maybe their interactions would have more sizzle.
I also wasn’t a fan of all the guys being obsessed with her, and kissing on her. Gross. Again, have some respect and keep it out of the group. It just backs up my doormat argument, and no wonder Caiden easily mistrusts her at the end with the “video”. Clearly, she will kiss and be attracted to anyone.
It also was pathetic she let Zayde kiss her after being almost run over by him. Again, I felt like it was a plot hole. There was no apology from Zayde, later on, and she just brushed it off like ‘s’ok, you almost killed me, no biggie.’
C’mon girl! At least try to punch him or defend yourself in the moment! It’s also sad that her reason for coming to Alstone was to look into her dad, and she has spent more time hooking up with guys, getting wasted and doing nothing much, unless the Four are involved…and even then, it’s not much.
I hope Winter is cooler in the next book, and she at least makes Caiden grovel somewhat.
The story so far is a little over the top with how much these kids get away with, but hey, it’s fiction, lol.
Here for the side characters, and the story! I think it’s a first that the main characters are not interesting or have much chemistry. i’m also here to see Winter’s mom get hers. Oh, man, she is evil and I hope she goes down hard! I will be cheering on the Four for that alone!
Couple: Winter Huntington & Caiden Cavendish
Author: Becca Steele
Tropes: enemy to lover, step-sibling, dark romance, bully romance, college romance, British romance, upper echelon
Review: We meet the FOUR in this book! The first three books center around Winter and Caiden who are step siblings who hate each other at first. The couple in this book have an instant attraction but strong aversion to each other due to unforeseen circumstances of their parents marriage.
Winter is new to Alstone College and meets Caiden at a party. She instantly feels aware of him but refuses to admit it to herself since he hates her on site. While she is clueless at first to the reasons he hates her, she soon finds out that she has stepped into a war she had no intention of joining. I loved her perseverance in book 1 and her commitment to solving her father’s murder. I think that Winter showcases a strong FMC who refuses to bend to Caiden’s will but also fights back with everything she has.
Caiden struggles in this book with his attraction to Winter and his hatred towards her mother. Since the book is in dual POV, we get to see occasional scenes from his side and learn how affected he is by Winter. I enjoyed the brief glimpses into his mind and the evolution of his character in this book.
The spice heats up about half-way through and their relationship is tested with betrayals and deceptions. As the plot unfolds we learn just how devious WInter’s mother is and how dark the underbelly of Alstone can be. I loved how the plots were revealed in pieces and kept you on your toes! Beware that this book ends on a MAJOR CLIFFHANGER!!
Rating: 9/10, terrific opening to the trilogy!

King Caiden, This guy, wow, the epitome of a possessive alpha! Cold to the bone, cruel and controlling. BUT don't we love when these types of guys start to fall for someone and they get conflicted and confused by it?! I live for this in dark/bully romances. And wow, becca steel you delivered it so perfectly.
Ok so I legit fell in love with Cassius. His playful side, flirty nature, the mischief he would constantly cause had me in stitches and I loved every second of page time he got!
Zayde, borderline terrifying but I love the mysterious and scary one of the group. I can't wait to know more about him and see how he progresses in the other books of this series. I loved that he's started to thaw ever so slightly from about half way through the book.
Weston, oh my gosh what a sweetie! I just want to cuddle him, I think he's amazing and a bit like a breath of fresh air from a very masculine and overwhelming atmosphere in the four. He's definitely Winter's confidant and I'm loving their beautiful friendship and bond that is forming.
Winter was an amazing female lead, strong, sassy, smart. Everything we want from the leading lady in this type of trope. I loved how she very quickly adapted and learnt how to be with each of the guys and I'm really rooting for her and her detective ways, even if it lead to a whopper of a cliff hanger! I mean thank goodness book 2 is ready and waiting for me because I don't think I would have been able to wait very patiently!
Let's see what happens in book 2.
I loved the characters in this book so far starting with our females who shine like diamonds, Winter is a genuine female with no curveball she sticks to her guns and I likes that about her, never giving in to easily even if she can be a bit eager, she found herself a great bestie too and Kinslee who has her back no matter what, she's the type of bestie every girl needs.
Then we have our 4, my fave being Wes and Cas, even Z grew on me but of course the winner of hearts has to be Cade the Alphahole....I mean I was rooting for a RH with the 3 but I had to tell myself this wasnt that type of book of course ! I'm so glad that Cade got over himself!!! Otherwise I think I would have cheered Zayde on for the next best thing!
Well worth the read and cant wait to read book 2
Winter doesn’t let Caiden faze her, she has a plan – find out what happened to her father. In contrast, Caiden has lost his mother and throughout this book – questions are answered but more questions are raised. The ending of this book had me going ‘I need the next one now!’.
It was nice to see Cassius in this book too because his demeanour and his bond with Caiden and subsequently Winter is endearing.
This book intrigued me because I don’t normally read stepbrother romances but this one has definitely converted me to the genre because hot damn this book is fully of chemistry. Caiden is a new angsty hero that I didn’t even know I was missing out on. I am definitely going to be reading the next two books in the trilogy to see how it all unfolds.
And am I so glad that I did!
It felt so good to get into another book series where I'm constantly enjoying the plot and the characters!
Winter is such a good heroine and I say this so honestly because most of the time I find some heroines so annoying - with the stupid actions they do. However, Winter was a great character - she was so strong, reckless - but had good reasons and honestly she's such a badass. I can't wait to see more of her interactions with the Four in the next books!
The Four are so interesting, I think I've fallen in love with every single one of them and when they were following her around I legit laughed so much!
We were left on a cliffhanger and OMG WHYYY!
But, I am so excited for the next book and the rest of this series, Becca's writing is so incredible! Everyone needs to read this series now!
