Liel Abada backed to quit Celtic for '£20m' as Borussia Dortmund cited - pundit

Noel Whelan has claimed Celtic may be resigned to losing Liel Abada for “£20million” but can use his sale to bring in even more talent in the transfer window.

The former Leeds and Aberdeen striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, branded the Parkhead side the “Borussia Dortmund of Scotland” because of their “sustainable” transfer set-up.

As per The Scottish Sun (20 September), Abada, 20, has changed agents amid speculation linking him with a move to the Premier League.

The report claims the winger, who has netted six league goals this term, was the subject of interest from Crystal Palace during the summer window.

Kieran Tierney, Odsonne Edouard, Moussa Dembele, and Kristoffer Ajer are among the players to leave for fees greater than £10million in the past five seasons (as per Transfermarkt).

Whelan insisted it will be “difficult” for the Hoops to reject “big money” from the English top flight.

He told Football Insider’s Ewan Kingsbury: “When you’ve got players who are a standout, there’s always going to be speculation.

“Celtic are a huge club, but they’re in Scotland. It’s difficult, as we’ve seen, to turn down big money from Premier League outfits.

“This is what keeps them sustainable and allows them to go out and get three more players to strengthen their squad.

“They’re very much like Borussia Dortmund. They might let one big player go for £20million, but they’ll go out and get many more in the door.

“It’s that kind of turnaround – which means they’re not weakened.

“This is how they keep competitive and sustainable – they’re the Dortmund of Scotland.”
