From the very moment I saw him perform with Joe Cocker during the Mad Dogs & Englishmen tour I knew I had found an absolute gem. To this day, when I listen to "A Song For You" I understand and know the essence of this man who is a fine and consummate musician, brilliant writer and thrilling performer. Leon Russell has been underrated throughout much of his career but thank God he has been given the recognition he fully deserves from his peers in the world of music. In 2011 he was inducted into both the Songwriters Hall of Fame and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame! This man has worked with everyone from Gary Lewis & The Playboys to Phil Spector to The Rolling Stones to Herb Alpert to Elton John and on and on and on. There is no artist worth a tinker's damn who wouldn't give his or her eye teeth to work with him and on this debut album we find the likes of Bill Wyman, Steve Winwood, Mick Jagger, Eric Clapton, Delaney & Bonnie, George Harrison, Joe Cocker and Charlie Watts! Russell's trademark "Tulsa" sound is a fusion of Rock 'N Roll, Gospel, Blues, Country and Pop and he has played all of it as one of the best "session men" in the business. This one is MY personal favorite of his albums and I always look forward to anything he is involved with.
This album is one of a handfull that I've always updated...first the vinyl, wore that out; then the cassette; that ended up eaten in my car player; and now the CD. I love this album and as I grow older, I like it even more. I first got into Leon Russell when he was doing the Bonnie and Delaney and Joe Cocker thing...then he came out with this, his first album and I snatched it up. The list of musicians who appear on this album reads like a who's who of 1969 rock...it quickly became a favorite: I bet I've listen to this album over 1000 times...it is ageless. Honestly, there is just no getting tired of this album; it's that good. Great songs: "A Song for you" brings a tear; a beautiful love song that has just enough Russell grit and soul to appeal to an old male rocker like myself! "Hummingbird" same thing...then mix in rockers like "Delta Lady", "Put a Spell on You", "Hurtsome Body" (my favorite), and geez...all the others! It is just a great, great album...I know I always do these rave reviews and give 5 star ratings, but it is because these are albums that I have loved for 35 years and will always have them around in one "medium" or another....This, however, is my favorite of favorites! A can't miss buy.
It might have been 1972 when I flew over to Honolulu to see my parents on their way back from vacation. It just so happened to be the weekend that Leon Russell was in concert at the Neil Blaisdell arena, Leon was with the Shelter people back then and played a grand piano. The stage was circular and went round and round so everyone could view the band. Later in the show Leon jumped up on his piano, grabbed his Les Paul guitar and brought the house down. The crowd was molten lava with red lights and all...of course the acid we took that night helped a bit. Then some 35 years later I had another lucky shot at seeing this legendary musician in concert at the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel...It was a totally acoustic concert with his friend Willie Nelson...I even got both of their autographs on the back of my ticket stub. Leon Russell is without a doubt one of the Great musicians of our time...see him if you can...before it's too late...!!!
