Graveside service was held on Saturday, April 4, 2020, 1:00 p.m. at Staton Memorial Cemetery, Scotland Neck, North Carolina. Arrangements were handled by Shawn Lea Funeral Home.
Lena Hall, a selfless giving spirit, slipped into our Heavenly father's arms on March 27, 2020 at Accordius Health in Scotland Neck, NC after a lengthy battle with several illnesses.
Lena was born to the late Jim and late Louvenia Pittman Hall on December 14, 1928 where she lived on Cotton Hill Community until the family moved to Julius Whitehead farm to sharecropping with the family.
Lena now joins her parents and siblings: James Ivory, Joe Louis “Bud”, Freddy “Big Red”, Gertrude “Gert”, Rose, Hattie, Mamie “Hawk”, Ethel, Ladie Bell “Teenet”, and Sadie Bell “Chuck”.
Lena’s educational level was minimized due to the demands of sharecropping, which held precedence over education; and its importance to the family’s sustenance. Also, Freddy, her brother's wife Elizabeth taught her to read and write.
Lena joined Cedar Creek Baptist Church at an early age and was active until her health began to fail.
Lena was a woman of many gifts and talents: our magnificent Chef, charitable and fashionable Beautician, and a skillful Seamstress.
Lena, a selfless giving spirit, never had children of her own and took the responsibility of caring for the late Bertha Lee Hall, her sister Hattie’s daughter born with cerebral palsy. Over 55 years ago, Lena traveled to New Jersey to get her deceased sister Ethel's children and raise them: Shakir ”Bubble” Shabazz, the late Gregory “Shady” Hughes and Ronald Hughes. Again, Lena selflessly helped to raise four generations of her siblings' children and their childrens’ children.
Lena was a very special aunt that we could go to and discuss our concerns with and she gave us sound and just advice. She would take us to the beach and occasionally sneak us to the Juke Joints.
Lena leaves to cherish her memories: nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, great great nieces, great great nephews, a host of cousins and friends.

Dear Family and Friends of Miss Lena,

They walk beside us everyday,
Unseen, unheard, but always near,
So loved, so missed, so very dear."
May she rest in peace.

Aunt Lena will be missed by the many family and friends that she touched during her 91 years on earth. My mother (Maxine Cornick) and I would visit her three or four times a year from out of state and we always enjoyed the time we spent with her. She was a wonderful lady and a 'great aunt' who will truly be missed. My fondest memories with my 'Great Aunt Lena' and her sisters were spent at the house on Douglass Hill, especially the wonderful breakfast's, the quilts, wood heaters, and the...
