About
It is called the Leaning Tower or the Tower of Pisa but actually it was never used for defending the city; it is part of the religious complex in the Duomo Square and acts as its bell tower. It played an active role in both human and divine timekeeping with its seven bells – one for each musical note – the largest of which, cast in 1655, weighs a full three and a half tonnes! It is known throughout the world for the beauty of its architecture, for its extraordinary tilt, which makes it an authentic miracle of statics, and for the fact that it stands in the universally renowned Piazza dei Miracoli, of which it is certainly the prize jewel. And this is why it is one of the 7 Wonders of the World.

Incredible tower - more impressive in person
The tower is an incredible sight to see and I was surprised with how much it truly leans! Pictures don't do this quirky tower enough justice. I would highly recommend a visit when in the Tuscany region. The whole square is beautiful

    Absolutely beautiful
I didn’t quite know what to expect, but the magic of the leaning tower of Pisa and the cathedral and baptistery nearby for me, were just indescribable. It was beautiful! Not only the uniqueness of the fact that the tower is leaning, but its construction and facade really are quite magnificent. I was overboard and overjoyed. we did a nighttime visit first, when the crowds were not so large, and then a Sunday morning visit when it was quite busy. No wonder it is one of the modern wonders of the world.

    Must Do!
I had been to Pisa about 21 years ago but wasn't able to climb the tower. This time I was with a group and our leader got us tickets for just about the last group that was allowed up. It's 250-ish steps but there is plenty of width and headroom for the first half of the way. The second half gets a lot narrower but there is still plenty of headroom so you are not likely to feel claustrophobic. The views of the baptistery and the town itself are well worth the climb up. Get your tickets early! (I'd shoot for near the end of the day as there will likely be less people in the tower with you.

    Amazingly beautiful
Absolutely loved the Leaning Tower of Pisa. So much more beautiful than I had imagined. It has a serenity all of its own. This was a whistle stop tour for photos but would dearly like to go back and take my time actually going inside.

Well worth a visit. Inexpensive. If climbing the Tower go early to book your time-slot (or online), otherwise pay when you get
Everyone talks about the Tower as if it's the only thing that is there. There is much more. The Cathedral is just breathtaking as is the Cemetery. The museum is meh but the Duomo is spectacular on the outside but rather bland on the inside. Everyone says pre-book your tickets. This is only essential if you want to climb the tower. If not, you can queue and pay to see the other monuments alone. Each monument is €2 or a group ticket is €10 for all monuments except the tower. It's quite a walk from the train station but there are fixed rate fees for a taxi of €10.60 (correct at the time of this review). Well worth a visit. Hints: there are a number of restaurants and cafés but not enough to fee everyone who visits. If you want to save some dish, take a packed lunch and suy on the steps of the Cathedral or Duomo. There are no picnic benches.

The leaning tower of Pisa, Italy
One of the most famous and iconic monuments of Italy, if the not the most famous of all. I'm glad that they moved the souvenir booths outside the Piazza years ago. Go early to avoid crowds.

    Pisa day trip
I think 1 day in Pisa is enough. It’s a pretty city, but the outskirts of Pisa are way more beautiful. We rented a car, and driving round the area was fantastic. We stayed half hour away, in a village called Morrona ! Amazing , stunning views. Excellent location to travel to vineyards, sight seeing, walks

    Leaning tower of Pisa
If in the area, this is a must see. Free to walk around grounds, absolutely beautiful! There is a fee if you wish to climb to the top of the tower (I did not). There is also a wall surrounding the premises that you can walk- best view from the wall. Small fee around 5 euros to access the wall. If you are afraid of heights, I would skip that.

    Classic you have to do
241 steps up and down (Same way) mean it get hot and sticky. Great views from the bell tower at the top. Timed tickets prevent it getting overrun and too busy. Very light security check on the way in. No bags at all are permitted so you much use the lockers first.

    Brilliant
We got a train there and expected it to be a quick trip, however there is loads to do. The tickets for everything but climbing the tower were only €10 each so it seemed silly not to. Cathedral is impressive, and in the baptistery one of the staff does an "echo demonstration" where he sings some notes for the echoing effect which is remarkable. There is a market just outside, selling souvenirs and clothes, and the town is interesting. The tower itself has an incredible lean on it, although it doesn't always show well in photos.

Rather than informing you on any historical points to The Leaning Tower of Pisa, as this information can be gathered through any good guidebook, I'll provide you with a few tips on how and when to visit this amazing complex of buildings. IF you are coming from Florence, you can purchase train tickets through Italiarail web site. In my opinion, it's better to view the complex in the morning, preferably before the tour buses unpack hordes of tourists. We took an early train, 7:28 from Piazza S. Maria Novella which arrived at Pisa Centrale shortly after 8:30. A direct walk from the station to the Tower took less than 30 minutes. It's best to purchase your tickets to the Tower before hand by visiting their website which allows you to choose a day and a time for your visit. A ticket to the tower allows you free admission to the Cathedral; however, you do need a separate ticket for the Baptistery. We planned it so we'd see the Baptistery FIRST (allow 30 minutes just so you can hear one of the ticket takers at the door illustrate the amazing acoustics). Depending on the time of year you visit (we visited in September) we were able to enjoy the Baptistery as early as 9:00 AM. From the Baptistery we then walked a short distance to the TOWER, allowing enough time to line-up before our designated time slot. Each visitation is time sensitive in addition to a fixed quota. Prior to your ascent a guide provides you with a short history of the tower in addition to rules and regulations. The ascent has approximately 296 steps and we did not find it daunting at all (and we're over 70!). Because the Cathedral is free, we then visited it after the tower. After our visit we enjoyed lunch in Pisa, but decided to revisit the complex one more time before leaving. And that is when we discovered that visiting in the morning was better than the afternoon. Long lines had now formed at the Baptistery as well as the Tower, and there was even a line to see the Cathedral. Though the afternoon light was excellent for photographing the entire complex, visiting it at that time would have tested your patience at waiting in lines. Returning from Pisa via Italiarail allowed us to take the 5:00 PM which arrived at Santa Maria Novella at 5:51. And a trip to Pisa well worth the taking!

Tip: no matter how small your bag, i.e. a purse, small backpack - check it in across the way at the cloakroom in/by the ticket office. You are not allowed to bring ANY kind of bag with you into the tower, no matter how small. Save yourself some time and check your bag in prior to standing in line. The Staff in the cloakroom will ask for the time of your scheduled tower visit. It's FREE to store your bag in one of the lockers.

That said, the tower itself is impressive and beautiful. I recommend reserving a ticket online and going inside. It's cool to climb to the top of such a historic monument. Note there are many steps and of course there's no lift/elevator! Excellent views of Pisa from the top.

Another tip: I highly recommend also buying (reserving) a ticket for the Museo dell'Opera del Duomo, which is next to the tower. You will get perfect, wonderful views of the tower with no one in your pictures. There was practically no one in the museum and I had a relaxing time sitting in the museum garden with views of the tower.

Take some time to just look at the intricate work that went into creating the tower, there's some much detail and it's survived history so well. Don't miss the church next door, which is free to visit, just make sure you get your ticket across the street first. We were there in late November so it was quite chilly and rainy too, but the crowds were much smaller too. You won't need much more than an hour or two for this stop, at least in the off season anyway, but afterwards you can take some time to walk the town and experience true Tuscany, where no matter where you go you can find a great pizza and gelato.

The square and the tower is stunning! I really loved walking around the square and seeing all the amazing buildings there. The tower itself is beautiful, it is really worth to go up and enjoy the view of the square and the city.
You need to buy the ticket online in advance to avoid disappointment not to be able to buy tickets as there were many people in the queue. They let you up in 'groups', based on the slot on your ticket.
You have to climb up quite a few steps and as the tower is leaning, sometimes you feel you are leaning with it, i.e. you are naturally moving towards the side or to the centre as you climb.
The top is great, you can walk around, sit down if you wish. It was really worth to visit!

We had a 4 day holiday in Florence but decided to take a day trip to Pisa to visit the site, which also contains 3 other buildings. Although it was very touristy I would definitely recommend a visit, it’s quite something to see the leaning tower up close. The complex is very well maintained and offers an opportunity to get some great photos. It’s free to enter the complex and to walk around so it can be a pretty cheap day. To go up the tower itself is €18, you can visit one of the other buildings for €5 each. We went for food after a walk around and getting some photos. I would recommend walking slightly away from the complex as all the restaurants close by looked pretty touristy. Just a short walk away you’ll find more authentic restaurants that are cheaper. The streets around the complex are really charming and worth a little exploring.

The leaning tower of Pisa has become a famous icon of Italy. We visited it in 2014 on our trip to Europe. As is the case with many monumental places in Italy, we had to park our bus far from the place. We took a second bus till the entrance of the leaning tower. There are lots of stalls outside selling souvenirs and leather items. From the entrance you can see the leaning tower and other structures enclosed by a high wall from all the sides. There are other structures around the leaning tower which has also stunning Italian architecture. I think all the structures including the leaning tower are made of marble, which can be found in plenty in Italy. The campus of leaning tower is very large to fit hundreds of people. It can be very hot on a sunny and dry day in Italy. But in the shades of the marble structures you really can feel cooler. It was great to see this monument once included in the seven wonders of the world

This is a landmark which I had heard so much about since young. So when I visited Florence, I had to add Pisa onto my itinerary.

Getting there from Florence is an easy 65 mins train ride from Florence main station and costs €8.90 per way.

Once in Pisa Centrale station, exit from the main entrance and walk 30 m to your right and take the bus there. Just follow the hordes of people, you can’t miss it. Just get down when almost everyone else does.

You can buy a €27 combo ticket which allows you to enter into all the attractions within the compound. Only the entrance into the tower is every 15 mins in a group and needs a time slot reservation. I bought the combo ticket at 10.15 am and only managed to get a last slot at 12.15 pm. It was all fully booked until 2 pm. You can bring an bag up, be it big or small. You can deposit your bag in the cloakroom for free when you have the combo ticket.

The climb is not too physically challenging. The views from the tower is magnificent and it makes the climb worthwhile.

Just do it if you can plan for an additional day when in Florence.

It is such an experience to climb the 247 steps to the top of this tower. We booked online as they only allow a limited number or persons to climb at any time. Before you are let inside you are asked to place your belongings in the cloak room which is a minute or so away by walk. You are given a brief introduction inside the tower. Each visit will last 30 minutes and once at the top, you will be asked to start making your way down once the time is up. The views from the top are amazing and very well worth the climb.

We prebooked timed tickets before leaving the UK in order to avoid the constant long queues. After the usual security check, we started to make our way up the tower via a small circular staircase. (it can make you feel dizzy at times) you finally reached the top and emerge into the fresh air right night to the several large bells at the top of the tower.
You get fantastic views from all sides.
The tower is about a 20minute walk from the Central railway station where there is a secure left luggage facility so you are hands free to enjoy the visit

We were staying in Florence and decided to take the train to Pisa to see the Leaning Tower and museums. The train was cheap and easy, then about a 20 minute walk through the centre of Pisa to the Tower. What an amazing sight! It is even more beautiful than the photos and a bit like a wedding cake with decorative icing. It really does lean! We paid to go up, which was a bit more difficult on a face mask on a hot day. Only small groups were allowed in at any one time and we had to wear a buzzer to ensure we didn't get too close to anyone for the whole social-distancing. That was easy for me as I was last up: 200-odd steps in the heat and trying to breathe through a mask was not great but worth it to get to the top to see the stunning views! Then you go up higher into the bell tower part and this is where I clung to the marble columns like a crab; I have no head for heights and got down quickly but it was a fantastic experience. We found the cafe in the Opera del Duomo Museum has a great balcony, away from the grounds and heat, where you can sit and enjoy a drink looking over a more private view of the Tower. A brilliant and memorable experience!
