Tanya leaves Moscow with her street-wise 10-year-old son Artiom to meet her English fiancée in London. But after he fails to turn up at the airport, Tanya, intent on staying in England, is forced to apply for political asylum and transferred to Stonehaven, a grimy former seaside resort where refugees are housed. Tanya gradually develops a relationship with an amusement arcade manager, who helps them escape. She must then decide whether to stay with him or return to Russia.

Evoking the kitchen-sink sensibilities of a Ken Loach drama with the gritty realism of Lukas Moodyson, Pawel Pawlikowski somehow takes one woman’s refugee experience and transforms what would usually be a harrowing journey of isolating bewilderment, into a sobering fairytale overflowing with a kind of cinematic warmth that only comes along once in a blue moon. Once again, Pawlikowski has shattered my heart into a thousand pieces and I’m completely ok with that. Last Resort is a wonder to behold.
Polish-born and Oxford-based director Paweł Pawlikowski reaches for the heart and speaks eloquently for the inarticulate in "Last Resort", a small and modest piece formed in a profoundly optimistic and generous foundation that depicts the drawbacks of a Russian woman who is forced to apply for political asylum in England and subsequently transferred to a seaside town employed for the housing of refugees.
One of those gentle little films that coats the viewer with the implications of human nature that the English so effortlessly and expertly conceive.
Not a film that your average Brexiteer is likely to want to to watch or recommend, Pawel Pavilowski's 2000 film Last Resort is nevertheless an extremely timely watch as we witness hate crime increasing and the continuing extremely disproportionate amount of negative prejudiced comment from the right-wing media and the professional bigots of UKIP and the Conservative party - the latter who seem to be achieving increasing positions of power since Empress Palpatine ascended to the throne yesterday. In the midst of this dangerous rift, Last Resort gives a human face to the issue of immigration.

Hello, it's me again, getting my heart broken by a Paweł Pawlikowski movie. Not quite the masterpiece level of Cold War and Ida, but still very good. Surprisingly sweet and heartfelt, considering the topic.
Feels very distinct from what this director has now become but still great. This is a down to earth character drama with less Tarkovsky influence and more 90's indie French influence. There is such a rhythm to the way the film is put together, and a bittersweet dreamlike quality that makes you almost forget that this is an unoptimistic story about an immigrant's struggle at its heart. Last Resort captures its time, place, and characters perfectly.
Loved this. Always a fan of filmmakers who, in the pursuit of realism, aren't afraid to lean towards characters being kind rather than being awful in dire circumstances.
Before letting us in on his parents' romance with Cold War, Pawel Pawlikowski directed and co-wrote Last Resort. It follows a Russian woman named Tanya (Dina Korzun) and her son (Artyom Strelnikov) who are stranded following her bid for political asylum in the UK.
I liked Paddy Considine's energy that he brought to the film. Sometimes his character felt like a magical fairy, always appearing when Tanya needed him. The sad truth is that many political refugees or women who are trapped in a situation like Tanya's don't have someone appearing out of thin air who can help them at every turn.
All in all, I felt it was a solid film.

Завязка похожа на "Женщину из пятого округа", то есть располагает к себе- женщина с маленьким сыном оказывается в ловушке английского городка для беженцев из-за слива бойфренда. Но если там завязка вскоре идёт в триллер и отвлекается от бытовых мелочей, то здесь быт героев- это всё. И господи, это кино- тупо моя жизнь до подросткового возраста. This is a real dirt-under-your-fingernails kind of film. A Russian woman and her son declare political asylum after they arrive in England and Tanya's fiance fails to show up to collect them. They then get shipped off to a scummy little town by the sea. Being from England, I know a few places like this and director Pawel Pawlikowski and cinematographer Ryszard Lenczewski absolutely nail the grimey, grey, downright depressing atmosphere of this kind of place. There's an amusement park with colours everywhere that have been completely drowned out, as if they were drained of all hope of ever being bright again. Simple but wonderfully done. Gritty but not nihilistic which is exactly how I like my social dramas.
Interesting to see how Pawlikowski’s style has evolved since!
