      Critics Consensus

Last Days in the Desert offers enough stately grandeur and spiritual exploration to offset an occasionally ambiguous narrative.

Aaron P One of my top five favorite films. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/23/24 Full Review Paulami A A powerful storytelling! Conversations between Jesus & Satan, Jesus & others felt like theatre performance. Ewan McGregor has been one of the actors known for being fluid & effortless, with this he takes a giant leap. And I am not a Christian! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 06/04/23 Full Review Audience Member Great film and Jesus is very real & should all listen to his word for eternal life. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/04/23 Full Review Audience Member I liked a lot this non-preachy portrayal of Jesus in his 40 days in the desert. It shows him as a human person without superpowers, he doesn't revive nor perform miracles; that is left to the audience interpretation. But if he doesn't have miracles, can Jesus still be good? His role is the one of an observer rather than mesiah. He gives advice but leaves the choice of wheter taking it, or up to the person that is listening. His temptation is helping, rather than leaving the humanity run it's course. I'm not a religious person, I don't believe in god. But like Lord of the Rings, Star Wars, Planet of the Apes, Back to the Future, or any good story. But I take to hearth the moral of the story. It interestingly feels like a spiritual sequel to other Ewan McGregor characters like Obi-wan Kenobi from the Star Wars prequels (an exile struggling with choosing not to help) and Doctor Sleep (he gives peace to the dying people). Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/12/23 Full Review Audience Member Stunning! Que hermosa versión de una de las historias más contadas Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/23/23 Full Review Audience Member Best schizophrenic Jesus ever. Roxana Hadadi Chesapeake Family Magazine Last Days in the Desert drags a little too long, but is interesting in its consideration of Jesus as a man, not only a religious figure. Rated: 3/5 Aug 2, 2016 Full Review Steven D. Greydanus Crux A promising exercise in a style of film-making I'd like to see more of, but it's a promise somewhat unfulfilled. Rated: C+ May 27, 2016 Full Review Marjorie Baumgarten Austin Chronicle Last Days in the Desert is a Jesus story that plays well for the nonfaithful who nevertheless appreciate the example of Jesus and his teachings. Rated: 3/5 May 19, 2016 Full Review Hosea Rupprecht Pauline Center for Media Studies I found it fascinating that the filmmakers chose to use the same actor for both Jesus and the Devil. Aug 27, 2021 Full Review Nicholas Bell IONCINEMA.com Last Days in the Desert is surely one of the most visually astounding yet unremarkable portraits of the historical personality. Rated: 2/5 Sep 30, 2020 Full Review Joel Mayward Cinemayward The Christian evangelical subculture will likely find the film too esoteric, too extra-biblical, and too challenging ... The indie art-house audience will likely find the film too spiritual, too biblical, too Christian. As such, I loved it. Rated: 4.5/5 Dec 30, 2018 Full Review Read all reviews
