Lasse Sobiech announces retirement from football

Stellenbosch Football Club would like to congratulate Lasse Sobiech on a remarkable footballing career and wish him all of the best following his decision to retire.

Sobiech on Friday announced that he would be hanging up his boots following a storied career in which he represented Borussia Dortmund, FC St. Pauli, Greuther Fürth, Hamburger SV, FC Köln, and Darmstadt in his native Germany, as well as Belgian side Mouscron and Swiss outfit FC Zürich.

“It’s time for me to hang up my football boots,” the 32-year-old said in a statement. “It was an incredible journey, full of great moments and unforgettable experiences. I am very grateful to have met such great people and personalities.”

He also paid special thanks to all of his former sides including Stellenbosch FC, where he made seven appearances across all competitions last season, notably delivering a Man of the Match performance in his final outing against SuperSport United.

“I got to end my career with an incredible adventure in South Africa at Stellenbosch FC,” he concluded. “Looking forward to everything coming next!”

Sobiech’s knowledge, experience, and ability were a massive benefit to the Stellies squad last season, both on and off the pitch, and the Club would like to thank him for choosing the Winelands as the final stop in his incredible playing career.
