1. The idea for a search engine came to Page in a dream, literally.

When giving a commencement speech at the University of Michigan in 2009, Page explained how an idea to create a search engine came to him in the middle of the night.

He jumped out of bed and began writing down his ideas.


2. Page was only 23 years when he started the Google project as part of his Ph.D. requirements in 1996.

The basic search engine that Page and co-founder Sergey Brin began in 1996 developed into Google in 1998.


3. The Ph.D. project that Page was working on was initially known as ‘BackRub,’ a nickname Page chose to describe the search engine’s ability to track the backlinks that were directed to a specific web page.


4. Page proposed that they sell Google for $1 million soon as he and Brin had established a functional search engine.

Fortunately, all the companies they approached including Alta Vista, Excite, and Yahoo! refused the offer.

Who knows what would have happened if Page pushed through with this idea.


5. “Google” as a company name was in fact accidental.

Page, Brin and a third party who was helping with the project misspelled “googol,” a mathematical terms for 1 followed by 100 zeros.


6. When Google, the search engine was launched in 1998, Page had to keep a $100,000 check in his drawer for up to 2 weeks because Google Inc was not yet a registered company.

The check came from Andy Bechtolsheim who cofounded Microsystems and who was the first investor in Google.


7. Both Page’s parents were computer geeks.

Larry Page is an American computer scientist and internet entrepreneur who, along with Sergey Brin, is best known as the co-founder of Google. He now serves as the chief executive officer (CEO) of Alphabet Inc.

Page is the son of two computer scientists, Carl Victor Page and Mary Louise Bell.

Page has a wide variety of interests outside of technology, including music, artificial intelligence (AI), animation, neuroscience, health care, biotechnology and aviation.

Page graduated from Lakeside School in Seattle, Washington where his father taught mathematics before moving to Michigan State University to study computer science.
