"Y'know everybody says I have good hands and everything, but the thing that makes a good shortstop is the footwork involved. If you have good footwork, if you can get to the ball, you can set up and get your body out of the way so you can make the throw. I think that's the most important thing." - Larry Bowa in Baseball and the Meaning of Life (Josh Leventhal, 09/25/2005, Voyageur Press, Page 83)

Larry Bowa Stats by Baseball Almanac |
Did you know that Larry Bowa stepped up to the plate on April 10, 1971, faced off against Bill Stoneman of the Montreal Expos, and hit a sharp single to right field in the bottom of the first inning at Veterans Stadium - the first hit in ballpark history?
Larry Bowa | The Sporting News | July 22, 1978Baseball Almanac Research Library
Did you know that Larry Bowa once held the Major League record for best fielding average in a single season by a National League shortstop? In 1979, Gnat played one-hundred forty-six games at short, handled six-hundred eighty-three chances, committed only six errors, and finished with a record setting .991 fielding average. Tony Fernandez broke the record ten years later, with a .992 fielding average in 1989. In 1999, ten years later again, Rey Ordonez had a .994 fielding average, setting a new fielding record that remains in the record book today.
Did you know that Larry Bowa was the best fielding shortstop in the National League in 1971 (.987), 1972 (.987), 1974 (.984), 1978 (.986), 1979 (.991), and 1983 (.984)? His six years leading the league were a National League fielding record for most seasons leading the senior circuit until Ozzie Smith tied him in 1987, then set the current mark at seven when The Wizard led again in 1991.
Did you know that Larry Bowa won a Gold Glove in 1972, the third by a Philadelphia Phillies shortstop behind Bobby Wine (1963) and Ruben Amaro (1964)? When Gnat won his second Gold Glove in 1978, he became the first Phillies' shortstop to win a Gold Glove at short more than once. The six year seperation (1972 / 1978), is the most by any National League shortstop since Rawlings started giving the award in 1957.
