To begin with, take a look at the cast that surrounds young Susie Amy as she portrays
the inherently awkward Valentine D'Artagnon - daughter of the infamous 1974 D'Artagnan :
Michael York returns to his role as the stumblingly lucky fourth musketeer.
Natasha Kinski takes on a character of the deadly Lady Bolton - who bears
an amazing resemblance to Faye Dunaway's - Lady DeWinter.
John Rhys-Davies as Porthos and Gerard Depardieu as Cardinal Mazarin are also cast as
characters whose purposes remarkably resemble those of the previous 2 films.
So much of the storyline is similar to the 1970's 'The Three Musketeers' and 'The Four Musketeers'
that originality won't receive the highest marks, However, it was still very nicely put together.
While written by Sandra Weintraub yet directed by Steve Boyum a palatable balance is struck.
Valentine's gender is utilized - but Not so overemphasized as to lessen it's appeal to male audiences.
Enjoyable as a swashbuckling story with just enough plot and intrigue to do justice to
Richard Lester's films- which remain - the best Musketeer movies ever made.
It's overly long, weighted with psychological dilemmas, it's probably another mental health film helping a portion of girls deal with their tomboyness or something. Heck, I don't know, nor do I care. What I do know is that it's along, boring and just full of uninsipred and no fun material.
York gets a paycheque for slapping his name on a musketeer film, Depardieu does the same, and what's her name struts her stuff as a machismo female in training.
I guess the one advantage this thing has is that it was actually shot in France, unlike the previous films, which were shot in Spain. Cest la vie.
Watch it if you must, but don't say I didn't warn you.
