Alison Balsom: ‘This is the most important piece written for the trumpet in 200 years’
Alison Balsom has an interesting article for The Guardian about the UK premiere of Wynton Marsalis’s Trumpet Concerto - scheduled for Thursday 11 March 2024. This complements Main_Baby's recent post drawing attention to the YouTube video on this topic.
I like both Alison and Wynton but anytime someone declares something radically artistically important before most people have even heard it, I take it with a grain of salt.
FWIW, I reckon it's too early to decide whether this piece is really that important. Come back in a couple of hundred years.
We found the gen Xer
I saw the world premiere live, Michael Sachs with the Cleveland Orchestra, at Severance Hall in Cleveland. It was amazing to hear and see. I don't think there was a style left unplayed. He switched horns once or twice, mouthpieces a few times, and one movement had so many mute switches I lost track. It was really cool to experience. If you get the chance, it's absolutely a must. He stood near the conductor but closer to the audience, so it was clear that everything was happening according to him. The more I think back about it, goddamn I'm happy I got to see that. It really invigorated me to keep playing and keep practicing and be the best I can. So freaking cool.
I'm seriously envious! Sounds like one of those concerts you remember for the rest of your life.
Has anyone heard the concert itself yet besides live performances on stage? Like has anyone been able to listen to a recording of it?
Can't find any recordings currently. Apparently, the world premiere of this concerto (played by Michael Sachs), which took place last April, was recorded for commercial release. See also:
