"The Lovitz"
Was thinking of how every great SNL cast has the utility player who can seemingly do anything and everything to make the show run smoothly..the Hartman..but also a cast member, the Lovitz, who brings a weird energy entirely their own. For the modern cast, Kenan is definitely the Hartman, with Sarah Sherman inheriting the Lovitz role from Kyle Mooney and arguably Leslie Jones.
Can you think of other cast members to served as their cast's Lovitz??
Will Forte, Rich Hall, Nasim Pedrad, Tracy Morgan, Gilbert Gottfried
These are all great choices (although I do think Tracy is too endearing a performer to be a Lovitz..Kattan was the Lovitz of his cast imo.)
Fred Armisan, Kyle Mooney
Armisen is a great choice!
My two favorite underrated cast members
Mind you I don't think Lovitz is underrated. He's likely properly rated. It's just his comedic perspective is so unique that he drags the show toward him versus being the utility player that someone like Hartman was.
In the original cast, if Aykroyd was the Hartman, Laraine Newman was probably the Lovitz..the one west coaster in a sea of East Coast sketch comedy vets.
nnjealous? ..
??
It’s a Lovitz character’s catch phrase.
Yeah, that’s the ticket!
I remember. But then..I'm not just a member of pathological liars anonymous..I'm the President of that organization to boot
Norm. Obviously he's mostly remembered on the show for Update, but he was so fun and weird in sketches. Remember that Celebrity Jeopardy only existed so that he could do his impression of '70s Burt Reynolds.
KENAN.
Fuck. It's literally like every single thread.
How does Kenan compare to Lovitz? From my perspective they're entirely different performers..
They’re highlighting your misspelling of ‘Kenan’ in your OG post.
Noted. And corrected.
Kenan is kind of boring. He’s never once felt avant-garde or weird in any way.
"Wassup Wit Dat" and Big Papi are delightfully weird. And Kenan's great at that kind of comedy. It's just that like Dana Carvey and Mike Myers..his brand of weird isn't very subversive or edgy. Nor does it need to be. Look at the recent Marzipan sketch.
