Meet Kristie Mewis: Everything to know about the World Cup soccer star from Hanson

As the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup kicked off last week in Auckland, New Zealand, all eyes were on Hanson, MA native Kristie Mewis as she made her World Cup debut.

Mewis, 32, currently plays midfield for the New Jersey-based "Gotham Football Club (FC)" of the U.S. National Women's Soccer League (NWSL) and for the U.S. National Team.

Mewis began to play professionally in 2013 when she signed with the Australian team Canberra United FC, going on to play for professional teams in Kansas City, Boston, Washington D.C., Chicago, and Houston, before being traded to Gotham FC in 2022, according to reporting by Jason Snow for The Enterprise.

But before her professional career, Mewis was a star on the Whitman-Hanson Regional High School girls' soccer team. By the time she graduated in 2008, she had scored 74 goals and had 34 assists. She went on to play for Boston College, graduating in 2012 with 39 goals, 38 assists, and nine game-winning goals.

On July 22, Mewis helped the U.S. team secure their first win against Vietnam (3-0) and five days later, played in a tied game against the Netherlands (1-1). Before she hits the field again on August 1, here’s everything you want to know about Hanson’s very own soccer star.

Where did Kristie Mewis grow up?

Mewis was born on February 25, 1991 in Weymouth. She grew up in Hanson, attending Whitman-Hanson Regional High School where she starred on the high school girls’ soccer team.

Does Kristie Mewis have a sister?

Born less than two years apart, Kristie’s little sister Samantha Mewis is also a professional soccer player. The two played together at Whitman-Hanson High and later became the first sisters to make a U.S. Women's National team together. She currently plays midfield for the Kansas City Currents, but a knee injury prevented her from competing in this year’s World Cup.
