Kalsoy, Puffins, and Distances. Oh my!

Hello everyone,
I'm coming to the Faroes late July to early August. It has been a dream of mine to visit this gorgeous country for about 14 years. I'm horribly excited and hoping to make the most of my time there.
I was hoping someone could answer a few questions that I haven't been able to sort out yet.

  1. Kalsoy is high on my list of places to visit. However, I can't work out exactly how to get there. Seems like it's only by ferry (no tunnels, yet) but I've been on the transportation site and I can't quite work out which route stops at Kalsoy. Can anyone specify where/which island the ferry departs from and the name of the route, so I can plan times of departure?

  2. I'm really hoping to see puffins. Is Mykines still the best place to see them? And will they be there in late July/early August?

  3. I'm planning to go to Suduroy and might end up staying there to give myself more time to explore. However, do you recommend staying in Torshavn the rest of the time while exploring across the other islands? I'll be renting a car, so that frees up a lot of logistics. Does anyone recommend another city to stay a few nights in, just for ease of seeing other sites? Or is it very doable to get around, but stay in Torshavn the whole time?

  4. Bonus question! Do you have any other tips, recommendations, or comments? I'm grateful for anything you might share.

Thanks, everyone!

Aloha, American here who lives in Maui, HI and we've been twice.

  1. To get to Kalsoy you take the ferry. Show up on time and have your booking. Once you reach Kaysoy there is a bus there (or two if it's busy season) and they'll take you (for a small fee) all the way to the other side. You can then hike to the lighthouse and then hike to see the Seal Woman or take the bus back to an earlier stop to see the seal woman. The ferry goes out of Klaksvik, schedule is here: https://www.ssl.fo/en/timetable/ferry/56-klaksvik-sydradalur/ Suggest you go early. To be honest, the seal women is more magical than the light house unless you're there on that 2 day sin 365 perfect weather. Our last trip it was so foggy and rainy we skipped it and walked through one of the tunnels, was kind of cool honestly.

  2. Yes, Mykines is the best, take the ferry over and prepay the "hiking fee" and enjoy them. You can see them other places too though, our first trip the Mykines ferry never went but got some great pictures of the ones at Múlafossur.

  3. Both times we went, we stayed in an amazing AirBNB in Midvagur right on the water. We had to drive for the restaurants and such in Torshavn but we didn't mind it. But there is the extra tunnel fees. Was nice going back to our house and watch the ducks at night/morning with my coffee.

  4. Eat at Fiskastykkid, hands down our favorite restaurant. Buy everything you can at duty free (especially alcohol) before you get your luggage. If you have time, drive all the roads/tunnels you can to explore, we got some of the best pictures of Faroese Ponies and some melon headed whales in a fjord by doing this. If it rains, go anyhow! If you want to book a tour, use https://guidetofaroeislands.fo/, they were always GREAT and helpful. Loved it. Their "see all tour" was amazing for a single day tour.
