This is a nicely done, cheerful, documentary about legendary TV/movie writer/director/producer Larry Cohen.

It is cheerful because it tends to focus on the joy, the fun, of filmmaking on the hardscrabble indie edge in the 1970s and early 1980s.
It is also NYC centric. Cohen, classic 1970s movies are set in the city.

We are told and shown examples of Cohen’s knack for stealing location shots in the city. This is when a stripped down, fast moving, production crew just shoots stuff on the streets without establishing permission through the city authorities, such as today’s Mayor’s Office of Media and Entertainment, or informing bystanders and pedestrians who happen to be there. Cohen also did not put a lot of planning into stunt coordinating. Fred Williamson, star of Cohen’s 1973 Black Caesar, tells some interesting fun stories about this mode of working with Cohen. He contradicts Cohen’s claim of performing a stunt of jumping from a moving cab before his star agreed to do it. “He’s lying.” says Williamson, smoking a big cigar. It’s very amusing.

Those familiar with Cohen classic 1970s-80s indie feature work, such as It’s Alive (1974) and it’s sequels and Q (1982) might be interested in learning through this documentary that Larry Cohen did a lot of TV writing of popular shows in the 1960’s when very young, in his 20s. These include The Fugitive, The Defenders, and being the creator of Branded (“Scorned as the one who ran, What do you do when you’re branded and you know you’re a man?”), and The Invaders.

Larry Cohen is interviewed in the movie. He is an interesting personality that only NYC could have produced, likes to talk, is proud of his work. He likes to focus on the positive end of a very difficult business that he managed to succeed in way beyond most others who attempt it.

This is a very entertaining fast paced documentary filled with enthusiasm and joyfulness in the creative process.
It could serve as an inspiration for young moving image storytellers.

Amazingly well directed and affectionately told. I am a film nerd and had heard of Cohen but had no idea how incredible his story was. I recommend it to every outlier no matter what tho bc you don’t have to be a film fan to be a fan of Larry Cohen!

The obvious comparison would be to Roger Corman who isn't even mentoned, but Larry's story is even more fantastic, funnier, and needs to be told! You've probably seen Larry Cohen's work without realizing it because he's so prolific, but how he got where he is--and why receives admiration from JJ Abrams to Martin Scorsese, makes for a priceless story.

Very briefly, Larry tried to play it straight, writing for programs like The Defenders, but like Sinatra, Larry Cohen wanted to do it his way. This led to a string of blaxspolitation movies, science fiction/horror like "Q" and (I haven't seen this one) a film about yogurt that eats people. Along the way, he dreamed up The Invaders, Coronet Blue and according to him, NYPD Blue as well.

And he's still at it. Although some of his greatness will never be repeated because after 9/11, you can't get away with the stuff he used to pull. Stuff like firing blanks from the top of the Chrysler Building or a completely improvised fight scene on a baggage carousel at LAX. No cops, no permits, no nothing. This is, or was, quintessentially New York. Anything was ok, so long as you didn't get caught--still true, in the world of finance and in politics. A great documentary on a very funny, very savvy, very creative guy. If that wan't enough, this has to be the only movie that has both Bette Davis and Traci Lords in it.

Get the bluray! Packed with extras - almost tripling the original running time. I wish I could say the same for the recent DePalma documentary.

Tons of great footage: some quite rare, The Private Lives of Edgar Hoover, clips from old TV shows he worked on and all sorts of clips from his lesser known films as well as his most celebrated. The archival footage (and Larry's stories about) of actors and actresses no longer with us featured can fill a book: Chuck Conners, Bette Davis and Broderick Crawford to cult faves like Zoe Tamerlis(Ms.45, Bad Lieutenant) and the late David Carradine - and many more.

A host of great interviews: J.J. Abrams, Rick Baker, Eric Bogosian, Barbara Carrera, Joe Dante, Mick Garris, Yaphet Kotto, John Landis, Laurene Landon, Traci Lords, Michael Moriarty, Tara Reid, Eric Roberts, F.X. Feeney, David J. Schow, Martin Scorsese, Ryan Turek, Fred Williamson, a few fans and of course Ace Raconteur - Larry Cohen. And many more! All have great stories and the affection for Cohen is moving and infectious. Tellingly, his first wife is interviewed: she has nothing but love and kindness towards him. Larry Cohen, in addition to his many, many credits - he's the best ex-husband in history.

Chock full of stills and clips from a decades long career. This movie is as lively and entertaining as any of Cohen's features.

I didn't know much about this writer/director/producer when I picked this up recently but.... I love documentaries so I took a chance. WOW... they really did it right. Not only do we have a nearly 2 hour documentary with excellent clips, excellent interviews and a story well told, but , and it's a big but.... we have a fantastic presentation on blu ray. I always wonder why we get documentaries without bonus features knowing they have many many minutes or hours of extra footage sitting in cans. Well this one features nearly 2 hours of bonus interviews that are a welcome addition to the main show but obviously for time could not make it into the final cut of the theatrical release. The package also features the soundtrack on CD! Studios should note this... if you want people to buy physical releases instead of just streaming or downloading... put packages together like this! OH... and I'm going to search out some of his movies based on this doco.
